Description I don't know whether this is a companion piece to this one [link] or what, but they sure do look a lot alike. Maybe this is a series? I don't know. I am doing one of Farael, for what it's worth, so maybe it just became a (very easy) series.

Pencil and PS.

Character is Rian again, of course.

Thanks! I'm glad you like it. I've drawn her a LOT, she's one of my favorite characters.

Yowza, what a spicy look she has in this one! though, despite her daring choice in clothing she still has this rather... sweet look to her, and i must say the curls and freckles help alot.

God i love how you draw hands. Simply AMAZING

Yeah, it's hard to look like a really hardened femme fatale when you've still got girl-next-door freckles and a big frizzy mop. She can achieve "spicy" fairly well, but in general I like to think of her as being, um... accessible. Glad you like her!!

My pleasure my dear~! shes quite charming <3 and its always the most unassuming looking person who is the biggest BAMF of them all ^.~

Those freckles give her a unique girl next door feel that helps her stand out.

Thank you! I conceived of her as being, at heart, a very normal person--she just happens to do a lot of wild stuff. A lot of my characters are like that; I prefer to let them be defined by their actions, and not just who/what they are. I play a LOT of humans for that reason.

I love the sketchiness of your linework, they make her hair look perfect! And her face and neck look so delicate and feminine.

Aw, thank you! I had a lot of fun doing her, there was a lot of motion in the hair. I don't do that a whole lot, but I like it! I should do it more.

TCShelton [2009-11-13 22:17:34 +0000 UTC]

These as a series in general are really great. I think with the three you have so far that they make really good character concept images because you get a good sense of the character's personality and image but you don't have all the shading and tones getting in the way. Miss Rian is such a lovely OC (Honestly probably one of favorites on DA even though I just started watching you) and her fun personality, I think, really gets across here. You always really seem too have good color choices too. Colorful but with a nostalgic feel and not too, oh, my God! in your face. Nice stuff.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

temiel In reply to TCShelton [2009-11-13 22:21:10 +0000 UTC]

AWWW! Man, that means SO MUCH to hear you say that about Rian being one of your favorite OCs... I never thought I'd hear that from ANYONE! And yeah, I agree about the tones getting in the way... I can never tell whether flat color looks good, or just lazy, but I do know that the tones look overworked half the time I do them. I'm really glad you like my color choices. I feel like my color work isn't nearly up to the same level as my regular drawing, but I'm wondering whether I've hit onto something with the flat color. Ah well, more experimenting is in order, I think.

TCShelton In reply to temiel [2009-11-15 06:02:25 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's just all personal tastes of course but I'm often draw to characters that come across as rather normal but then have some unusual elements about them (probably because those are the sort of characters I like to create.) Rian's like that. She's lovely to look at but not overly so that she becomes Mary Sue-ish. Her concept's not too over-worked (see most Final Fantasy characters) but she's not boringly normal either. She's got a strong personality but has vulnerability too. She's got a quirky quality to her that I like and dude...the hair. I think that equals like 50% of my love, I don't know why. But yeah. I just likes her I guess.

And you might well be on to something with the flat tones. If I could come up with a way of flatting that I liked I'd probably do that instead. I'm pretty new at coloring too and it always feels, like you said, overworked and like it gets in the way of the original line work. If I were you I'd definitely do some experimenting.

Oh, and thanks for the recent fav!

temiel In reply to TCShelton [2009-11-15 12:07:43 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I kept meaning to fave that one because every time I saw your gallery I was like "Man that's a nice piece"... I don't know why I didn't get around to it before.

And thanks so much for the kind words about her. As you miiight have realized () I put a lot of myself--not necessarily personality-wise, but in terms of time and dedication--into my characters, and Rian's been one of my favorites lately (she's a hell of a lot of fun to RP, too, since she just DOES stuff that I usually didn't plan). The kinds of characters that I play (and usually, the kind I create) are almost always pretty normal, but I like to think with enough personality that they're interesting to draw at least. I think Alan gets tired of running games for my normal, normal characters, since he likes the weird ones.
Trean is probably the furthest away from "normal" I've ever played, and really, when it comes down to it, she's still a pretty standard elf--generally, I want a character to be interesting for WHO they are, not WHAT they are. I've known a lot of people who aren't content unless they're playing THE LAST OF SOME FORGOTTEN RACE, or that ubiquitous Drow-exile-to-the-surface-world, which have oddly become a dime a dozen for player characters in spite of repeated references to their rarity... I don't mind those types of characters sometimes (I mean, I freely admit that Farael there is a huge fantasy cliche in his OMGYOUNEEKNESS, and I did come up with him), but not to play myself, you know what I mean? I have a hard time connecting with them on a creator level, just because they're really hard to identify with, which is why I see a ton of people come up with characters like that and they come off as really two-dimensional, with very little defining personality beyond "Well, they're the last of this forgotten race!" I don't mean to say it can NEVER be done well--in fact, I see people do it well all the time--but enough people just don't bother, that I have a bit of a reflexive eye-roll reaction when people tell me about their Singular Strange Character with Laser Eye Beams and Vampire-Werewolf-Demon-ThreeKindsOfElvish-Angel-Animal Heritage.

The thing I love about digital color is that it's really relatively painless to experiment with a bunch of different approaches. I'm SO GLAD I have that tool at my disposal... man, a few years ago I swore I'd NEVER go digital, but it's just much more rewarding to me than traditional at this point. Can't beat that kind of speed, versatility, and cleanliness.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TCShelton In reply to temiel [2009-11-15 22:16:41 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, you know I didn't really even think about the whole roleplaying aspect. That does make it a little more interesting because you do sort of have to find something to connect with the character you're playing. So I could understand why some people would want to go completely over the top with it in some ways because people want to get as far away from their normal, everyday selves as possible but it doesn't always make for the most interesting characters to outside viewers.

It's funny, I only just started digitally coloring about three years ago, but before then I'd never really played with color before. Occasionally I'd color some of my own work with colored pencils or the like but mostly I just did line art and heavy pencil shading. So coming into digital coloring was a pretty eye opening experience in terms of choices. I still feel a little overwhelmed at points but, man, nowadays my art just doesn't feel complete with out it.

temiel In reply to TCShelton [2009-11-16 02:05:15 +0000 UTC]

That's exactly the thing about digital art! Using it as a tool has actually helped me a lot when I use traditional color now, because I always used to be EXTREMELY conservative about my color use--either that, or it had no unity at all. In comparison to the way I used to work, I'm FAR more adventurous about my color choices now (and really, that's not saying much... -_-), thanks to our good friend Photoshop and not being afraid to mess something up beyond repair.

Ooo. I really like the face, she looks really happy. The stomach area looks really tiny though, it seems kind of awkward. It reminds me of that woman who was on TV showing her tiny waist from wearing tighter and tighter corsets. But.. the more I look at it the more I think it might just be her pose.

temiel In reply to Synieth [2009-11-13 12:08:21 +0000 UTC]

You know, you're the first one to point this out, but that's actually what I was thinking as I drew it. I decided to cut my losses and go with it because abdomens always look at least a little weird in an extreme contrapposto stance like this, but I'm glad I wasn't alone in thinking "hey... what's up with that waist?"
