Description OK, this might belong in Scraps, but I'm of the opinion that a nice pencil piece is worthy of being considered a finished piece. Yeah, yeah, the hand is off (because I shrunk it down in Photoshop and didn't redraw the lines), so it's *technically* not a finished piece, but the *rest* is very nice. OK, so I really wanted more people to look at it than would look at it in the scraps.

This is a base I'm going to use to do a lareger finished pencil piece to put in the art show at A-Kon. I'm going to print this out at about 14" wide, slap it on a lightbox, and put my nice paper on top of it to render in pencil. Or conte pencil. I haven't decided yet.

At any rate, I like this base enough that I think I may render it digitally, but that won't be done in time for A-Kon.

It's Genjo Sanzo from Saiyuki, for those not familiar with the character.

I think I almost like this sketch better than the finished version, because it has more life to it...

Yeah, I tend to suck the life out of my finished drawings and inks, and I haven't figured out how not to yet. Arg.

hm, my art teacher always tell us not to think so much and to stay relaxed...maybe that would help, since it seems like you were so concentrated on making the final version 'perfect' that you forgot to put the soul in it...so just donΒ΄t get too hard on yourself and stay relaxed, then the drawings might still have all that life of the sketches, just even better...

Dunno. Heh. An artist friend of mine recommended a shot of vodka before art to loosen up, although I haven't tried that.

sounds like a plan...but vodka...yuck...baileys (or any other sweet liquor) would be my drug of choice...

I dislike most cream liqueurs and whisky-type drinks, but I'll drink vodka and, along with a couple friends of mine, drink Jose Cuervo tequila straight.

Pretty darn good pic considering it's the third best character in the series. Behind Goku and Homura of course! I'd REALLY like to see what you do with Homura.

this is gorgeous, I just love the position. And the proportions are wonderful. I always thought the same about Scraps. Maybe if you put the finished piece up later, then you can move it to Scraps. (I'm always so paranoid myself about it getting moved, but I tend to like my sketches better than my finished pieces anyway)

Yeah, I thought about converting it to a scrap later, and I'll probably do that. If my scanner doesn't chew up the nicely-penciled version when it's done, I'll put it up here and move the sketch once I get it done (hopefully later today).

*cough* Sorry. Mild fangirl fit.

Dude, you...hee. Toast Rack on Heroin is right. Curse it, Sanzo, do eat something.

I admire greatly your ability to draw pectorals. It always takes me about six tries before I get it right.

Also, the fabric folds are godly.

I actually kinda like the hand. It looks cool. But of course, I have this habit of drawing big hands. Eh. This is a really cool pose here, and I'm really at loss for anything else to say. Except the typical gushing, which i'm trying _not_ to do. heheh.

oh...
It's Sanzo.
I like it
Might just me, seeing as everyone else seems to think the anatomy is great.. but the arm seems a little long to me. Not to a huge extent, but it might be that hand that's throwing me off. n.n;;

Other than that o.o excellent peice.

It's been bothering me slightly for a while, but I think it's that the *torso* is ever-so-slightly short. His arm is in proportion to his shoulders and head, but I think his midsection ought to be a wee bit longer. Not that I'm going to do anything aobut it in this [encil pices I'm doing at the moment, since I discovered this after I put in enough of the piece to make it a hassle redrawing, but when I get around to doing a digital version, I'll see what I can do.

*nodnod* It was bothering me just a tad... trying to figure out which was long or short.
But again, overall I still like it n.n

Don't ya hate it when ya post a pic, and only then do you notice something small that throws it off?

I think you did EXCELLENT! Also if you mean the gap at the thumb just pencil it in you silly. Almost like this ( and just widen the triger more. That is if you don't mind taking an advice. It's your work and I don't want you to change it unless you feel uncomfortable with it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

telophase In reply to Misaki-chi [2004-06-01 07:08:00 +0000 UTC]

I'd scanned in my refined pencils over the red preliminary scribble, and what yuo see is what I was left with when I dropped out all the reds. To fill it in properly would have required me printing it out and penciling it *again* and since I'm about to do it on a really nice sheet of paper I didn't want to waste the time refining the base. I'll have to refine it later, though, if I do a digital version.

I have no problem with people giving me advice, even when I don't agree with it, so you don't ever need to feel hesitant about giving it to me. (even when I don't respond, because lots of times the only answer I can give is "You're right" and that gets boring to type. )

Misaki-chi In reply to telophase [2004-06-01 07:26:51 +0000 UTC]

Oh I see. Don't you just HATE it when that happens. Half the time that's what I run into with some of the effects on my photostudio. Escpecially with a negative. It takes out the most important part of the image. I'm glad to hear that you don't mind taking advice and I know how it feels when people question my art. However, if something is bothering me and I hear an advice from a fellow artist I'm like you're right. That's what it is. Sometimes I'm just plan lazy to do it. Oh! I know I forgot to mention this too, but it's like how the others say. The body structure is done VERY WELL and it suits him to a tee. Even though he not wearing one. <----Just a stupid humor I had to put in there. Ok! You can shoot me with the banishing gun now.

*BANG* Heh. Thanks -- As I said in a comment a few replies up, I really like Kazuya Minekura's toast-rack-on-heroin anatomy style, because it's *fun* to render all the bits and bumps, and I'm trying to get my style a bit closer to it, so I can do that sort of thing more.

Although I now see the collarbones are a bit too straight - collarbones are more S-shaped, and I think I need to adjust them a wee bit on this other version I'm about to attempt.

If you're ever looking for someone to throw down a little ink over your pencil work... drop me a line. It would be fun to work over such a clean artist. Take a look at my gallery and let me know what you think!!! Dan Prado

telophase In reply to PradoInkworks [2004-06-01 07:58:54 +0000 UTC]

Sweet inks! You're tempting me now. I have a project I was originally doing earlier this year for the Tokypop Manga Contest which got stalled after eight pages of rough pencils because I started obsessing over inking, which I suck at unless it's simple linework like the coloring-book pieces in my gallery. I ended up doing like six different inks of one page, all of which sucked (well, it would have helped if I'd done my last round of pencil-refining *before* I attempted inking) -- so much that an artist friend I showed them to pretty much winced and said "Why don't you try doing really rendered pencil work for your final version." (And then Life Happened and I put pencilling the other 12 pages on the back burner until the next competition go-round.)

Anyway, I'm not so presumptuous as to say "OMG PLZ INK 20 PAGES FOR MEEEE!!!11!!!1!one!!" but if you'd be willing to do a page or two so I can *see* what the bloody things would look like with ink on 'em, I'd be *very* grateful, because I think that might help me. I've got eight pages in roughs so far, and I need to slap 'em down on a lightbox and refine my pencils one last time, but if you're willing to do that, that'd be very cool. This is one of the pages I've got done, and it's up on DA because it's one of the nicer ones - the rest are either sketchy or too cartoony as of yet (But I *hate* the knee in panel 4 - I've got to redo that when I do that last round of refining...) I'm babbling now. I should go to sleep instead of posting on DA.
