Description Yeah... so was having issues with shading eyes and hair and such. So I decided to try and make a tutorial.

This is, admittedly, not my best shading job, but I think it works for the purposes of a quick tutorial. Hopefully the comments are more helpful than the picture anyways.

Please try and ignore the sudden change in color at the bottom. I'll fix that later. >__>; No idea how the color got there, honestly.

And if you want to know how to make the lineart or tears, there are other tutorials on dA which state exactly what I did.

There are better coloring tutorials than this, too. .-.;

But that's beside the point.

Enjoy~

Hmmm...that's an interesting method. I never use the magic wand button. I have to try that sometime.

[Re-comment! I am so awesome. >D]

I hafta say, this is sooper helpful O:
The hardest part is figuring out how to convert this to GIMP. >.> (I always hate that part).

You wouldn't happen to have masking in Photoshop, would you?
and would that be similar to locking the layer? >.>

Uhhhhhhhhm.
.__.;

It's sort of like...

You have a layer, with pretty colors or something, but you only want part of it to show up, so you add a layer mask, and then you erase the parts of the mask where you want the colors to show up.

I can screenie some stuff or something later if you want. >.>

Hn. Well, locking the layer just makes sure that you can't color on transparent areas. xD;

God, that'd be so much easier o_o;

but, in a jiffy, I guess that's similar enough.
just, like..
what I need to spend 2348925 minutes doing, you can do in the press of a button.

i don't know if i should say(type) this...
Your colouring skills is great, but maybe more contrast for the shading can make ur works look more 3-dimensional-like...
well, here comes the critique(hope u don't mind): u can make some difference in thickness of ur linearts (u did thicken the lineart for the eyes right?) for emphasis of the picture. This can give even more 3D effect and also help make the picture more 'interesting' i guess...
for example, at the tip of the chin, hair, the nose and maybe corners where it's supposed to be dark

btw, how did u do the tears? i wanna learn~

Photoshop throws me off a lot when it comes to coloring. .-.; My shading is a lot more contrasted there, but when I save it, it all blends together and is toned down a lot. I don't know why. It bothers the crap out of me. It's also the reason that the background randomly changes to pink up there - it looks white in the program. I'm not sure if it's because it's a JPG or what. >__>; I do need to work on fixing that, tho.

I do understand what you're saying about the lineart, but I'm working with a mouse(and a very old, finicky mouse), not a tablet, and if I use the pen tool to make smooth, but somewhat boring linearts, it looks a lot better than trying to use the mouse to make dymanic(and very shakey) linearts. The only thing I feel comfortable drawing is the eyes, as you pointed out.

I'm working on trying to vary my lines a bit more, but it's a slow process.

And this is an old lineart from almost a year ago. xD

And look up "tears tutorial" or something in the search option. You'll get about five really good ones. O:

haha that's true that it's really difficult to draw using a mouse...but ironically, even when i used a tablet, my linearts can be shakey too

I like it so far ^^

And i have a question,

for highlighting the eyes, cant you just use the dodge tool? or MUST it be the lighter color?

Well, for the part at the bottom, it does need to be a lighter color. For the light shining in the eyes, you probably could. I just tend to avoid the dodge tool because, for the most part, I don't like the way it looks. But that's a personal thing.
