Since human beings harnessed the secret of fire the natural world has been seen by many
only in terms of how best it can be exploited of its abundant riches. It’s amazing now to
look upon the desert sands of the Arab lands and know that this place, the cradle of earliest
civilization, was once known as “The Fertile Crescent.” All Europe was once one great forest –
until all those trees were needed to create the naval armadas of dueling empires. Only the
Earth’s natural forces, like earthquakes, have been more destructive and wasteful than humanity.
“The Romantics” were a movement of poets, painters, philosophers and others who launched
the first Great Dissent against the idea of our Earth as being only a resource to be used up.
They sensed the destruction of the natural environment would mean humanity’s own decline. They
sought preservation, understanding and, especially, the actual experiencing of nature’s terror,
awe, and sublime essence as the key to discovering one’s own humanity.
Humphry Davy, a Romantic philosopher, wrote that the natural world demanded “an attitude of
admiration, love and worship… a personal response.”
In 1849 Henry David Thoreau published his enduring classic, Walden, about his withdrawal
from society to free his mind and live for a while by a pond in the woods. The dissenting
current calling for connection with rather than dominion and exploitation of Earth has remained
a steady force since the time of the Romantics, especially in the arts community.
The first Earth Day was in 1970, another time of political upheaval and radical dissent.
Concerned scientists and environmental activists took the lead in warning of the dangers of
destroying our planet, focusing on air and water pollution and the chemical poisoning of food
and the soil. Laws finally began to get passed and a general consensus was finally established
that wrecking and using up the planet was probably a really bad thing. A cleaner future seemed
in the making.
Now the world is about to celebrate Earth Day 2012. And while the “green is good” consensus
still holds, it appears the headway that was made in the 1970s has now stalled out and even
gone into reverse.
Once again, it may be the artists who have to step up to make the world aware of the problem,
and with communities like DeviantArt, it might just be possible to really fire up intense discussion,
launch artistic environmental crusades and spur genuine change. The new “Romantic” artist response
to the environmental crisis may have already begun with James Cameron’s “Avatar.” Has any recent
movie or other work of art inspired such a resurgence of reverence for natural wonders (and contempt
for corporate environmental misdeeds)?
Now more than ever, as fears that human agency may be fueling global climate change, it is time
to take inspiration in the natural wonder and beauty and rhythms of our Earth. Perhaps artists and
others, once again embracing a “romantic awe” for life on this planet, can create the art and stoke
the passions necessary to swing hearts and minds back to the cause of Earth’s rescue and recovery.
Heidi and Ayame-Kenoshi took action in 2012 by organizing a tree planting
expedition that brought environmentally conscious deviants together from across southern California.
Photos courtesy of kyle-culver
"On April 15, 2012, a group of 20 deviants met in Los Angeles, CA to aid in street tree care. Partnering with
TreePeople.org , our deviants weeded, watered, and re-staked trees in order to create a more beautiful and green
neighborhood. DeviantART definitely represented, as deviants comprised the majority of the attendees at the event!
After a hard day's work, we ate lunch, drew, and talked all things DeviantArt. Thank you to everyone who came
out for such a fun and rewarding day!"
– Ayame-Kenoshi
Did You Know?
Founded by Gaylord Nelson, a former U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, Earth Day began on April 22nd, 1970. Nelson took action after witnessing the extensive damage caused by the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California.
In 1990, Earth Day went global, with 200 million people in over 140 nations participating, according to the Earth Day Network (EDN), a nonprofit organization that coordinates Earth Day activities.
In 2010, the Earth Day Network launched “A Billion Acts of Green” -- a service that allows individuals to register the actions they’re taking to protect the environment -- making it the largest environmental service campaign in the world.
Earth Day focused on clean energy in 2000 and involved hundreds of millions of people in 184 countries and 5,000 environmental groups. Activities ranged from a traveling, talking drum chain in Gabon, Africa, to a gathering of hundreds of thousands of people at the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Nature's beauty is a blueprint on how to live a full life. It's her operating instructions that govern our behavior by engaging our sense of smell, touch, taste, and the visual splendors of color, texture, composition, and symmetry. By opening our hearts, nature uses beauty as a tool of survival, because we will protect what we fall in love with.

Questions for the Reader
1How often do you actually stop to contemplate the beauty of nature – in a sunset, a walk in a park, a moment in a garden?
2Do you feel that the sheer amount of amazing technology now filling your life (iPad, XBox, etc) has dulled your sense of appreciating your time in the Great Outdoors? Do you think you need a better balance of the technological and the natural in your life?
3How much inspiration, as an artist, do you draw from Earth’s natural beauty? Do you have a special place to take a trip to, to experience for a while, to re-charge your inspirational and motivational reserves?
4Do you have any ideas on how to celebrate Earth Day that might be genuinely inspirational for an artist (or a simply environmentally aware and concerned person)?
5Where is the one place on the Earth you hope to go one day to experience, and why?
6Is there one law you wished could be passed, what would it be? Or if there is a single simple message you’d like repeated like a mantra in our schools like the Pledge of Allegiance, what would that be?
7What is the most naturally beautiful place on Earth you’ve ever been in? And what is the most horribly devastated by modern man?

1.) Almost all the time.I LOVE Nature. If I could,I would ditch the city life in heart beat, just to live in the country side <3
2.) a) No not really,I mean yes and no.But there are times where I do take a break and admire nature of the outdoors. b) Nope. It's fine.
3.) a) Well I'm not sure I understand the first part of the question, but if it's what I think what I means,I have always had a love for nature and it's wildlife whether it from the icy waters to the forest lands, jungles, sands etc. and invented an original character based on my love for nature and called him Eros.I even created an earth day pic with him and gave him a b-day on earth day.lol
4.) I'm thinking of doing yet another drawing with my O.C. Eros to support Earth Day! <3
5.) Ireland.I've always wanted to go there because I feel as though it has the most lush and grander scale of nature than I feel I know of,though I'm sure any place is more or less the same.I apologize for offending anyone.
6.) a) Free the animals in all capivity.Oh wait, does that count? or rather no to capture wild animals [if that counts?]. b) Nothing.Mantra's freak me out.

I stop and wonder at the beauty of nature all the time. I recently got new glasses and I find myself staring at all the individual blades of grass and all the leaves on the trees... I have come to realize that you really have to have imperfect vision before you can see everything. If you're used to seeing all the details in life, you eventually take it for granted. However, if you are used to seeing indistinct, blobby shapes, once you have the ability to see everything, you really DO see everything, and you appreciate it more. I also love being outside after a heavy rain. The colours are so vibrant, and there's this fresh smell in the air. The trees look so alive.
If we destroy Earth, nobody will be able to marvel at nature's wonders. Staying inside will be preferable to being outside in the polluted environment. It would be so terrible if we ruined our planet...
Will certain humans never stop? Will some do absolutely ANYTHING for money and power, even if it means hurting Earth?

We forget that nature (the earth) will take care of itself with or without human beings. We need to find a balance between the way we live our lives and how we use the resources available to us.
Technology should enable this instead of being used to, more aggressively, exploit the earth. We are all to blame, every one of us with a mobile phone, a computer, a fridge, etc. Rampant consumerism has lead to rampant exploitation of the earth and its resources as well as the exploitation of animals and other human beings whose lives are worth very little as reflected in the prices we want to pay for our products and as reflected by in the profits made by conglomerations while poor people in poor countries dig minerals out of the earth with their bare hands (in some cases) in order for us here to have a fancy multi-enabled device in our soft, moisturised, hands.
Earth day should make us aware that our desires far outstrip our needs and that our current living standards are not sustainable, not while life expectancy in some other countries are around half our pensionable age. We must 'encourage' our governments to make realistic laws that will enable the Green future instead of it being a vehicle for tax collection.
We must be more conscious of our purchases and the foods we buy and the amount of waste we generate. We may live longer now that we did decades ago and we may be healthier now that we were decades, but that will change if we don't change. And by the time we notice the change it will take decades if not millennia to turn it around!

I definitely agree with you. What we're doing doesn't just affect us, it affects all the other species on Earth as well. Once we humans stop being so selfish and greedy and face the problems that are our fault, we might actually be able to fix the problems we created.

1.) Not much, sadly enough. I go for a walk a few times per month in the little forest nearby my home to spot animals. I also work as a volonteer in a wildlife rescue centre, it's there where I come most in contact with animals.
2.) Yes, I'm now sitting behind my computer and listening to music while I can go outside. I think people should get behind of their computer, tv or playstation and get more outside, but that's difficult sometimes (same for me)
3.) A lot: usually I draw animals (birds, dinosaurs and other predators). Doing this ever since I was a kid. I don't really have a place outside to get my inspiration, mostly I get it from what I see on tv or I just get it out of nowhere, but sometimes I draw the animals I spot during walking or those I see in that wildlife rescue centre.
4.) I think just go outside for a day and explore that little bit of nature that's still left. Doesn't matter if it's just your backyard or a huge forest. Another idea is helping a nature club for a day, visiting a zoo, ...
5.) To Northern-Europe or Canada.
I really love that kind of nature: giant conifer forests where's an almost absolute magical silence, I've experieced it once and this is what I thought of it I really hope I can see these forest during winter 'cause it's so beautiful when I see it on television or in books, so in real life, it must be an awesome experience. And than you've got the animals: wolves, deer, eagles, wolverines, lynxes and other of those magnificent creatures. And at last: if I go Northern enough, I might can see the Aurora. Like some people would like to see vulcanos or giant waves on sea, I would like to see the Aurora.
There are ofcourse some other places I would like to see: Australia, the Amazon-forest,...
6.) A law like "Nature habitats must become protected, just as the animals that live there."
7.) Like I said in 5.): a conifer forest, this was The Black Forest in Germany.
The most horribly place are the big cities, not really a place for me: there's almost no green over there.

I like drawing and painting.
I like playing video games whenever I have the time.
And I also like to recycle as much as I can.
I wish I had a job in the recycling industry waste management and it would be better if the law to dig up landfills was approved I think landfill mining is a good idea so that all the waste dumped by people around the world could be salvaged instead of just rotting away in a land fill I don’t have a job at the moment. it would also create more jobs in the recycling industry if the recyclable material was salvaged instead of being dumped. There are so many people without jobs who could be employed to recycle the raw material in a recycling facility so that it can be reused and pumped back into the manufacturing industry.
Also the Electronic waste produced by people should be properly recycled in the country that it was used in instead of being dumped in third world countries like Africa and Asia. All countries should take responsibility to at least break it down into secondary raw materials instead of just shipping it out to the third world countries by marking it as second hand used electronics.
The world is running out of raw materials so it would be better to salvage what’s inside landfills and to also segregate the recyclable materials at waste management companies instead of just landfilling it all.
I would be nice to work as a video games designer but I think since I am not qualified I would rather have a job in the recycling industry whilst doing short courses for games design and animation I feel like there are many opportunities in the recycling industry I think that many unemployed people can benefit from jobs in recycling.

7. That I myself have been in... I've only really been to Dallas for my mom's parents, Houston for my dad's parents, Corpus Christi, South Padre Island, and even all the way to Alabama for their beaches in the Summer and Spring Break. Florida I think, and... Las Vegas. I guess it's Dallas though. They got big trees their in my grandparent's neighborhood. For the other, it would be Las Vegas of course. XD I wouldn't know if it's devastating, but there is a lot of buildings for sure. It's strange too... There's more than just Gamblign and Strippers, like adult stuff. There's stuff like The Vatican (Caesar's Palace) with restraunts and hotels like Venice, Italy and a place like New York with a roller coaster and stuff. o.O It's a pretty interesting place. But don't most poor and/or rich places have a lot of crime? While not necessarily illegal, stuff like gambling is considered evil in religions like Christianity, right? So yeah... I don't know... I'd have to live there myself to really know, but Dallas vs. Las Vegas is what I got.

"Has any recent movie or other work of art inspired such a resurgence of reverence for natural wonders (and contempt for corporate environmental misdeeds)?"
YES. Video games like Role-playing games and Fantasy books with themes of Dystopia.
For games we have Final Fantasy VII and Mother 3, and for books, we have things like The City of Ember, Uglies, and The Giver to think for these feelings too. <3
Earth is beautiful! <3 The beauty that man itself can not create... We're so used to Nature that sometimes it just becomes part of every day life, but when you really stop to think, it's amazing thing...
There's so much we've made, like cars and skyscrapers, and the digital world like cellphones and even the internet we're using right now to talk to people all around the world... but beautiful things like trees, flowers, the ocean, and the sky... It was already made before we were born, and is so awe inspiring... <3
Oh, and for songs, there's John Lennon's "Imagine" and Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" talking about World Peace and the beauty of the world. <3
