Description Inktober/Tanktober 2020 Day 18

The Czech hedgehog anti-tank obstacle was one of the defining features of the Atlantic Wall, lining the potential landing beaches. A simple and effective means of preventing tanks from penetrating a defense line, sometimes with landmines buried underneath to make them even more difficult to remove. Ironically, some of these would later be used to create "Rhino" bocage cutters attached to the front of M4 Sherman and M5 Stuart tanks.

Worth mentioning are the Duplex Drive (DD) Sherman tanks, a modification to enable tanks to come ashore after being dropped just offshore from LSTs. Unfortunately, many sank before they could reach the beaches to support the troops, especially around the American beaches at Utah and Omaha they encountered choppy waves that overwhelmed these ungainly tanks. But once ashore, the crew could drop the canvas screens and operate as normal tanks.

American tank crews had the lowest casualty rate than any other combat role (highest was bomber crew)
I'd rather take my chances in these than as an infantryman or crew a late-war German tank.

The amphibious shermans mostly sank if memory serves. I'd take a regular sherman though
