The female jackals and storm jackals, yes. I looked and looked but couldnt find anything about the skirmishers, so I just gave her a smaller crest, no large beak-teeth and no red throat pouch.

The reason elites are "overrepresented", madame, is because if the combat ability that they have.
They normally stand a large threat to a spartan (y'know, the entire BASIS OF THE GAME ITSELF), and have a much more diverse back-story than the other species (aside from perhaps, prophets), allowing for a lot of differentiation and levels of power.
While the other aliens are just fine and dandy, everything from Unggoy to Yanme'e... are just kinda weak in comparison to something like a hunter or an elite.
(now, a grunt tank pilot OC, THAT would be interesting.)

Actually -sir- all of the races have interesting and detailed backstories, but nobody pays attention to them because they arent as "cool" as the elites. Its the furry mentality: Why make a boring human character when you can have EARS and TAILS?! Why make a tiny masked midget when you can be a 7 FOOT DINOSAUR WITH A SWORD?? On the other hand, it seems nobody cares about backstory. If they did, there wouldnt be a million female elite marysue soldiers with giant knockers.
Its also a matter of relatability. Its easy to relate to the elites, because the games and books allow you to get to know them. They have faces, expressions, voices, etc. You even get to play as one. Theyre the primary enemy, they lead all other enemies, theyre at the forefront of your attention throughout the series, so you cant help but get to know them. Its much harder to grow fond of something wearing a mask, a toothy maw that just sqwawks, or a bug.
I, personally, find the elites to be too stuck up and whiney. All they do is bitch about their honor. Kig yar on the other hand dont give a shit. They want two things: money and blood. My kind of characters. So, I made some.

A few tips:
1) Find references and have them available while drawing. Do NOT trace! Tracing will get you nowhere, but it usually helps to have reference for where things go and posing, especially if its something you arent familiar with.
2) Start with shapes. Like I said, the head is sort of a wedge shape. The torso and hips are something like two boxes. Leg and arm muscles are oblong spheres, Etc. Break it down a bit.

That journal of his that you commented on about the "big,, bad, mean, evil, sony fanboy troll"?
Yeah, that was me e.e And to set the record straight, he came to me, begged me to read his fics after I said clearly I wasnt interested, assumed everything I said, every opinion I stated was a direct attack at him, bitched me out and blocked me for no good reason. So no, we arent friends (and I am not a Sony fanboy! XP) ^^
I see that, I saw your char line up. Lol kroot XD
I generally dont like doing fanart, Im never satisfied with it. Some detail is missing, the armor is wrong, it doesnt fit...meh.

Meh, I just wanted to set the record straight. I posted an angry rant journal of my own that he probably wont read (which is unfortunate since I responded to all of his arguments in great detail!). I got more support than he did XD
Yeah but even the personality...I dont want to be out of character D:

Eh, detail is overrated. If somebody is pointing out little flaws in your art rather than commenting on the character's personality, they shouldn't be commenting at all.

Tawadi In reply to Lorcan0c [2011-04-17 23:40:19 +0000 UTC]
Detail is hardly overrated. If youre making your very own, completely original character, fine, go crazy. But if youre basing it off a race/place/species/universe/etc that someone else has put effort into organizing into a coherent and interesting story, the least you could do is pay attention to detail. Youre borrowing their world, show it some respect.
Aside from sticking boobs on a bird, it seems like youve done your homework, kudos ^^

Haha, well that's me. I know, breasts on replites and avian creatures, makes no sense, but hell, NOTHING in sci-fi makes sense. What baffles me is that people rant and rage the lack of sense of Sangheili breasts, rather than questioning the Forerunners, an ancient race that had the technology to wipe out all life in the galaxy but couldn't stop the flood. I mean seriously, a bunch of by Forerunner standards, primitive, life forms and one soldier who wore armour 1 sixth the standard of their own armour managed to suceed where they failed, how is that remotely possible???
But I thank you. I do consider myself well versed in the Halo lore. I even have the Halo Encyclopedia, great book, not enough covenant info... grr.

Tawadi In reply to Lorcan0c [2011-04-17 23:56:03 +0000 UTC]
Bungie spent more time on "lets make this fun" than they did on "lets make it make sense" XD Which I am actually quite ok with. Mindless violence is one of my favorite passtimes in the virtual world XD
But I also worship Bioware. Amazing worlds, intriguing stories, wild races, believable characters...I would love to work on a project with them or even just be a fly on the wall, see what goes on behind the scenes.
Boobs on non mammalian species still irks me to no end though e.e My birdies dont get any. I feel like it would be funnier that way. Imagine if a reptilian or avian race visited one like ours. We would spend years trying to figure out tell the males from females XD Would the females bother wearing shirts? How would it affect culture, style, and focus? Details! details make things interesting! Then again most of the viewers are horny males who find boobs more interesting than backstory, so I guess Im just a freak in this case *sigh*
π: 0 β©: 1
Lorcan0c In reply to Tawadi [2011-04-18 00:12:45 +0000 UTC]
I guess. Oh, I adore Bioware for the vast expansive universe they created for Mass Effect. When I read in the coverage of ME3 that Bioware may go on to make a Mass Effect MMO, I almost cried with joy.
I know, it's a kind of a pain, but I don't think of breasts as something a character needs to be appealing sexually. I just find it really helps to identify the male and female thing a lot easier. The animation company behind Halo Legends' "The Duel" went to ridiculous lengths to make the female Sangheili look female to the point where it got ridiculous. The mandibles looked like lips, and frankly it makes even less sense for a reptillian race to have dreadlocked predator hair than it does to have them with breasts. I mean really, Sangheili already have a lot in common with Yautja (predators) in regards to the mandibles, cloaking, swords and plasma weapons, they don't need THAT to make it worse! I mean given the choice between my female elite OC having breasts, or a ridiculously small phsyique, dreadlocked hair and almost non-existant mandibles, I'd go with the boobs!
No, you're not a freak. You have your opinions and I'm proud of you for sticking by them. I don't have to fully agree with them, but I respect what you're saying and understand it.

Tawadi In reply to Lorcan0c [2011-04-18 01:05:01 +0000 UTC]
Really? I havent seen anything on them except that page. And I still feel like the turians are more reptilian than avian. Teeth and no feathers...not to mention poisonous XD
Thats good to know, because I enjoy breaking all social norms in those regards XD Lune is quite fond of my scientist Fenix [link] and has made a SORUS character just to go after her XD Little Sasha <3
Bungie just needs to post a picture of a female! Rawr! Is it spines? The wiki page says its calloused, and thats what it looked like in Reach. The skirmishers dont show any difference and I couldnt find anything on it, so Dahl stays XD
I said I dont under mind furries, I just dont understand them, and I didnt think they belonged in Dead Space (which is established as human). I said that kig-yar dont like elites because theyre pompous (in character). After he begged me to read his stories, I told them I found them boring and difficult to read because they dont seem to follow any coherent pattern and that he should try simplifying and streamlining them a bit into an actual story instead of a conglomeration of disjointed sentences.
I have no intention of dragging you into that mess (which is long done anyway), I just dont want you thinking ill of me. I know what first impressions can do, and Id like you to know where I was coming from. I was not trying to troll him.

Lorcan0c In reply to Tawadi [2011-04-18 09:26:17 +0000 UTC]
Well my freind ~Skyward-Dreamer got me onto the idea of Turians being avian. That and in Mass Effect 1, the Turian Mechanic on Noveria uses the phrase "If you polish enough gizzard" in place of "If you polish enough boot", and since Gizzard is of course an avian organ, I sort of unconciously made that connection.
Oh, of course. There is no "social norm" for me. xD I'm weird and I'll happily be the first admit it! I don't blame her for being fond of Fenix, she is a cute, albeit a little creepy (XD) character! What's SORUS? I'm not fammiliar with it. But as long as we're on this subject, Lune is extremely fond of my Sangheili OC, Beyra - [link] (My first drawing of her. My art has improved since then... and I'll go ahead and point two things out. Yes, she has bewbs, that's just how she is. Secondly, yes, that glowing around her hand is a Biotic feild. She is an ME / Halo crossover OC, and is a skilled Biotic.) Lune freely admitted to being Beyra's fangirl. She even made an Asari character who is to Beyra as Conrad Verner is to Commander Shepard!
I know! If anyone says "ohhh but you could see different looking Jackals in Halo Legends!" I say GO TO HELL. I mean a proper female jackal, not the same one with slightly longer quills! I think it's spines. Spines quils, generally pointy bits on the backs of their heads, same defense mechanism as a hedgehog more or less. Good! I like Dahl
I agree with you there. I don't have a problem with them, I just... don't see the appeal. And you are right about that, things have never sat well between the Kig Yar and the Sangheili. I make that quite clear with my characters. For example, Vonna is between ships right now and working on Beyra's vessel "Impending Salvation" until she can find somewhere better, but she doesn't exactly treat Beyra with the most respect. (Although that's kind of a personal issue, since she was forced to grow up alone on a remote lawless Kig Yar colony during the Covenant Schism because of her brother joining up with Beyra to fight the Covenant alongside the humans and then the six year war against the Brute packs that refused to surrender.) Oh, sorry for rambling there. I always get carried away talking about my characters.
Back on topic, I'd say that Zealot is taking this idea too seriously when it would be better as a light hearted story. It's a little unfortunate when people get a little big headed and don't seem to realise that constructive criticism is there to help rather than hinder, and take it as an insult when you offer advice. I'm the exact opposite, I know my art's not great, I openly admit it, but people seem to like it, so I keep drawing.
I'm freinds with you both (Or at least I like to think I'm your freind ) so I'm obliged to do so if I can work things out between you two. This isn't your fault, you're not dragging me into anything, I swear. If things get a little over my head, I'll back off. I don't have any negative opinions regarding you. You're a real nice person who has shown me nothing but kindness. That's a pretty damm good first impression, don't you think?

Tawadi In reply to Lorcan0c [2011-04-18 18:00:51 +0000 UTC]
Its a popular theory, Ive heard it before, I just dont see it myself
Social norms are for squares XD SORUS is fun if youre ok with gore. Im not big on all the...eh...fanservice, but the gore and creature making is fun, and I get to draw fun comics with friends! XD [link]
Arg I just think they look so weird with boobs. A little lady lump to make them more feminine sure (Happy Feet anyone? XD) but those are like DAAAAAAUM But Im also biased against boobs (I hate them I hate them I hate them! *glares down*) so dont take my ranting personal.
Go ahead and ramble XD My kig-yar have nothing personal against the other races, just the ingrained bias against them (though Dahl often wonders if drones and lekgolo are edible ).
I just feel if youre using something like Dead Space, in which all the characters are human, it makes no sense to have a two legged talking fox as the main character. That was my argument, take it how you will. Well he didnt take it well. -.- By any chance have you actually read his writings?
Well Im glad I havent scared you off yet Id like to think Im a nice person. But I also happen to be bluntly honest (or honestly blunt?) And if I dont think something makes sense Im going to tell you, AND importantly tell you why. Some people dont want to admit that they can improve, which is most unfortunate. Glad youre willing to hear me out, even if it means me nitpicking your booby chars x3

Lorcan0c In reply to Tawadi [2011-04-19 00:12:21 +0000 UTC]
I suppose. I don't personally think too much into it myself.
Well, durr, social norms are duuuuulll.... fanservice is everywhere, easier just to accept it rather than fight it.
Yeah, I always found that little bump thing to be kinda off-putting in Happy feet... but it's sorta different when it's my own OC's, I can't explain it really.
Ah, makes sense. Erm, whu? Who'd want to eat Lekgolo? well the Kig Yar are avian I suppose... and birds eat worms and bugs... XD
I know right? I mean, in an RP I'm in, a freind of mine had a human-ish Neko y character, but he didn't just out of the blue go "It's a neko", he explained it and grounded it well. In this particular sci-fi RP, the reason for his character being essentially a human with animalistic ears and a tail is because he has all the beneficial aspects of an animal, like heightened senses and reflexes, a greater survival instinct, etc, he didn't jsut add it for the sake of it or to satisfy some odd fetish, and I respect him for it. Ummm... I skimmed it. I clicked a random chapter and stopped, closed the page as soon as I saw the word "Renamon". THAT is where I draw the damm line. Digimon is practically sacred to me, it was a huge part of my childhood, and when I see soooo many furry fans fantasising, fanarting and fanfic-ing over Renamon, the one female digimon character who is a humanoid rabit like creature... it makes me sick. And frankly Digimon is the LAST thing I'd want crossing over with Dead Space... Am I the only one who thinks this? That a Cartoon for children shouldn't be crossing over with an "M for Mature" blood and gore horror game??
It takes a lot to scare me off, don't worry. I try to make as much sense as I can with my explanations and characters (minus the addition of chesticulary devices...) so as long as you don't focus too much on my characters, we should be okay. I don't mind you having your objections to their physical appearances, but if you have fault with an OC of mines' principles, values, personality or backstory, then I will fight back.

I dont mind it so long as its not completely raunchy. I LOVE SatW, for example, fanservice and all (yay Iceland!). x3
That was exactly my thinking. A bird as ravenous as a kig-yar coming across a race of worms? They eat the fallen anyway, why wouldnt they be tempted to snap at one of those little wiggly worms?
Frankly Im not a huge fan of crossovers of any kind (no offense to your Halo Effect fandom, I dont get it). Youll excuse me if I sniff irritably at your booby biotic-wielding elite XD But Id still rather see that than a furry fetish/scifi survival horror cross any day. Especially a poorly written one ><
Youve made plenty of sense, and already shown yourself to be more reasonable and literate than most of the people I talk to on here, friend or otherwise. This pleases me greatly, you have no idea. Ill grumble about your choice of anatomy, but any issue I take up with your characters otherwise will be completely in-character (pff, elites.).

Lorcan0c In reply to Tawadi [2011-04-19 10:01:17 +0000 UTC]
SatW? I'm not fammiliar with that acronym.
I'd say it's perfectly possible. They are very vulture like, so it makes sense. They'd probably snap up whatever meals they can find and wouldn't be too picky about the taste of it.
It's not a "fandom", it's an RP me and some freinds devised. Your character can be of any science fiction race of video games, film, etc. It gives our RP'ers a lot more freedom of choice with characters and makes for an interesting story, though Halo and Mass Effect are the primary populants. Although if I may present a theory, I think the reason ~SangheiliZealot1 has been making his silly stories is because of ~SligarTheTiger posting stuff like this - [link] a lot lately... *sigh*...
Thank you. I don't mind, I'd prefer to know a freind who is adamant about their views than submissive for the sake of agreement. That's a role I often end up pushing myself into. If I have a problem with something someone says, I just don't bring the issue up in the hopes that things will resolve themselves without any need for me to speak up.

According to the wiki page, theyre known for nomming on fallen soldiers, friend or foe. I added that into the description of my OCs, cuz I find it amusing XD
*grumbles* Details.
Or zealot is just furry obsessed and doesnt care for reason. I get the feeling from his ranting that he doesnt need a reason for it. Frankly, if someone is that against people, then replace all the humans with some animal race. Just dont do both...idk how to explain.
Im too blunt and stubborn for that. I wont get involved if I dont have to, but if someone brings it up to me Im not going to back down. I push back.

*Gets hit by bok* OW! Can this comic series wait? I've got a lot to deal with at the moment.
Oh? That's interesting. I always thought that was the Kroot, but the species are very simmilar. I remember reading a section from "Kodex Kroot" which listed a report of Gaurdsmen who will of course be put to death for "consorting with xenos" who hired Kroot mercenaries for help. One of the Kroot's terms was they get to keep the remains of anyone they find after the battlefeild, freind or foe, human or Kroot.
Details? What, you want to hear about this?
Yeah... it could be that. But he is a total fanboy of Sligar's work, so it's likely too. Really, friggin' Renamon from Digimon.. I just... no. That's all I can say. No... I don't know why these weird f*cks see her as a sex object....
