Description
This pencil drawing of Hiccup and Toothless is a study to help me decide the pencil strokes (line styles and direction) to use in the finished drawing of the concept. The previous drawing was just a simple value study of the concept. I will do more drawings like this while I develop this idea. Though, I don't intend to post them all. Drawn with an HB pencil on an 8 by 10 inch scrap of mat board, and Hiccup and Toothless may be nearing the size they will be in the finished drawing. The original drawing of the concept was done in ballpoint pen as I thought the idea was going to be done as a large ink drawing. That pen drawing convinced me that the idea would work better as a pencil drawing. (Edit: for some reason, this is not accepting the full title I entered which is "Hiccup and Toothless - pencil stroke study number 1" - not even accepting the 1 spelled out as one.)
As I have said before, The teacher in me wants to inspire those who are much earlier on in the learning process. In the case of this series of studies, I hope to show those who are starting in pencil how they can take their ideas from simple line drawings to more finished pieces of art. There is a book I have recommended in the past and will do so again now. For those who would like to learn about what pencils can do, look for a copy of Paul Calle's book THE PENCIL published by North Light in 1974. Doing an image search for Paul Calle Drawings will give you a good look at his work, but this book goes into his process of creating these drawings.
This Hiccup and toothless belong to Dreamworks Animation.
