Entry for the critique challenge held by CRFractals for the Fractal Week at projecteducate

This is my first critique on DA, so here goes!

I chose this piece to critique as, of those included in the critique challenge, it was the one that immediately caught my eye and that I found it to be aesthetically pleasing, with its quite formal, but fascinating, fractal "bloom".

Although there are many fractal blooms posted here on DA, this is one of the softer, prettier ones that I've seen e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

The combination of opposing warm golden-browns and cool blues work well together to give an overall calm and soothing feel. The increasing intensity of the blue around the centre draws the eye in to observe the floral detail; the two blue areas on the left, though, are slightly distracting - as highlights they would maybe work better using the brown tones, rather than blue.

The centre of the flower is more in focus that the outer areas, which again draws the eye to the more intricate and detailed area, which is good. However, the very centre - the bright white area - could perhaps have a little more definition or detail to it, possibly using the complimentary golden hues again.

The texturing is very good, giving the composition really quite a natural and organic feel.

The slightly off-centre framing works well, although the left hand area is perhaps a tiny bit too dominant; making the width slightly smaller, while keeping the height the same would perhaps keep the attention focussed on the more interesting 'flower' part of the composition.

The little spotty lighting effects are cool, and add additional interest. They make me wonder where this flower is located!

Overall, this is a very lovely fractal, and the points made above are really only very minor suggestions e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

In this work there is nothing troublesome. Many flowers on dA, with the "cross" variation used to split the petals, often have their petals split in an unnatural manner.
Ofcourse it is very difficult to split the petals and and the same time try to avoid the obvious running through in the petal layers.
But here everything looks perfect: the coloring, the sharpness, the details, the balance, shading and splitting of all the petals...the latter because it is very subtle in the center of the flower and therefore not so very showy, which is good !
I can't think of anything negative to be said of this creation.
Pardon me if my English is not very good. I am Dutch speaking. I hope you understand perfectly what I mean.

It's a bit confusing, and contradictory, and clearer in some places than others. I like that in some places, the color is warm-actually seems kind of warm, that is-and in others it's cold. Although around the left outside bit, there could maybe have been a bit more detail. The edges of the petals being blurred is a nice touch. The flecks are interesting, but in some of the outer petals-compared to the inner ones-they look a little oddly placed. Although the upperish right corner confuses me a bit; I can't tell if it's supposed to be the same flower or a different one,due to the elevation of the outer petals on the left. 'Nyway, hope you find this to be helpful.

I usally love all your works, but this one is very weak to me (you asked about a critique). There is no clear focus point, so the eye is moving all the way and does not find a place to rest. The shape itself is nicely done, where the quality of the texture is very varying. Colors are good, but the mint spots at the left area do not match the overall artwork. 2 stars out of 5

the texturing and the shape are amazing, especially the petals that are very organic. The colors draw the eye towards the center but I find they are a bit too desatured. The colors give me a feeling of autumn and nostalgia.

This is an outstanding 2D bloom! The unique shaping of the petals, each in such a life-like form, as well as the stunning coloration and focus, give this piece an almost contradictory fantasticalΒ verisimilitude. The obvious shadowing work gives it depth, while not taking away from the enthralling center illumination -- in fact, they offer even greater emphasis to that brilliant light. Amazing job!
