It's all Bananas and Dancing with Toothbrushes for them.Here he is! Monkey boy.
Even though I tease him NON stop, I love him. Best "middlechild" to the Kuchiki family. The cherished pet and beloved feral boy.
And in consideraiton to , who said somethign wise- I think the Crown of the Baboon King is held by BOTH Renji and Zabimaru. They are a TEAM. Renji controls and makes Zabi stronger, and Zabi manifests into the physicle entity to give Renji his power.
A little note about the content:
While Zabimaru should be a Japanese Makak, the Hamadryas Babon is similar in resemblance however doen'st live ANYWEHRE near Japan (Hamadryas live in the region of Egypt and the Savannahs). And MY personal fav Baboons of ALL time are the Olive (Anubis), Chacma (Ursinus), and Mandrill. So I took liberties when Designing Zabimaru with a hint of them all- after all, as the top primate of the bunch, having a bit of eveyrone is amythological expected.
The two olives under were just a fun additive on my behalf to give the picture a more "in the jungle" feel.
I'm sure Renji spent many a-day tree swingin' and crap flinging. Byakuya avoids those days without objection.

This piece is just great. Having said that, I really think that zabimaru is, if not a nue, then at least strikingy similar to one. (The wiki article describes the nue as a mixture of tiger, monkey and raccoon dog, making it similar to the chimera of greek mythos. But then again, you probably know this better than I do.)

Actually, you're not far off with the baboon thing.
Zabimaru is actually a 'Nue', from Japanese mythology. A baboon with the tail of a snake. [link]

He is not a "nue"- Zabimaru is an amalgamation of 2 mythological concepts: The Monkey King, and "Babi"- and Egyptian mythological being that was renown for his ferocity, machismos, and protection or wandering travelers, and protection against against snakes. He is often depicted in sculputre and image with a snake at his feet/tail.
gave a stunning lecture at Keikon and Anime North this year that took an in depth look at the symbols and mythological backgrounds of all the characters in bleach. Not all of them are based in Shinto tradition, and concepts that didn't exist in the culture- like machoism- who didn't have a symbolic representation were "borrowed" from other cultures.

you repeat one mistake you don't notice it seems. forearms can't be so wide, they rapidly become more narrow to wrists. check out photos of bodybuilders.

It's not a mistake it's done deliberately. Same goes for when I draw calves and thighs. I put more "animal anatomy" proportions in my humans- especially if they are based off animals. Even when not I just draw the "human animal" with drop-shape bellies, stalky arms like a gorilla. I hate human anatomy because it is wrong and deformed. SO I change it to what it is SUPPOSED to be.

Oh coooool. I like baboons, especially mandrills. Again the rendering is lovely, expecially in the mouths... Teeth, teeth, teeth.. I can imagine the "amythological" baboon being as big a gorrilla...and being the true king of the jungle.

I particularly like the pencil shading on the muscles there. Boy, it'd be just weird to see a Japanese Macaque being scary. I always envision them picking at each other's backsides and chilling in hotsprings and being awesome gift shop animals. Good that you went for the scary baboon thing.

Well quite honest, Macaques are more like "the banderlog"... they just aren't the apes. They are monkey. However, if you want big teethy madness, it's the big bad boys you need. So liek you, I just couldn't picture a Macaque. More likely to sit there and pick parasites of Renji then be fierce.

Whihc IS kind fo funny, now thta you mention it... Zabimaru doesn't have the Baboon butt, and doesn't look baboon at all (he does look like a Monkey- Macaque), yet they DO call the attack "Baboon king". now THAT's interesting... does the snake have cushions? we need an arse shot.
