Description

Gallarus Oratory, in Ballydavid County Kerry, was built between the seventh and eighth century and is believed to be the best preserved early Christian church in Ireland.

It's actual purpose and when it was constructed is shrouded in a number of different interpretations over the years.

The shape seems very simple yet it has clearly been done with great care and skill.  The curves are very smooth and getting the corners right must have been quite a challenge.

The people who built it were certainly craftsmen.

This is so beautiful and impressive... are the bricks held together by cement or is it a 3D jigsaw

It's built with cut stone and no cement and is watertight.

I thought that might be the case... It is a lost science/art since we've found more convenient technologies, that make building easier... It is as if the more civilised we become the less individual expertise we need to achieve greatness
