Description Mumbai, India
October 2006

Walking around one night me and my mate came across this little girl sitting by the roadside staring off into the distance. Usually when kids in India spot tourists they immediately show attention and act quite animated. This girl didn't budge though. She had tears in her eyes and continued to look away, even when we gave her some sweets and money and asked her what was wrong. The entire time she didn't look at us, even when I took this picture practically in her face.

A nearby guard noticed us trying to talk to her and we asked him why she was just sitting like that. He said her mother had kicked her out of the 'house'.

This is the only time I've ever come across a street child that hasn't reacted in some way to me/my camera - it was odd, and very sad.

--------------
I used flash in this instance - I still haven't figured out how to take good-quality pictures at night without using a tripod..

This is such a beautiful image and so haunting. Would it be ok if I used it in my design tech project for school? I'm designing a charity box. x x x

you know, its a very weird situation for me when I deal with such portraits..
its the basic reason why I dont comment on street photography.
A child's sad face is the worst thing ever for me as for a lot of ppl. Im a mother you see and I feel horrible..

You have done a wonderful work here, technically.
she has no reaction at all to the camera and the disappointment is written all over her face.. You have focused on her face amazingly well.

great job.

Thanks a lot for your comment Kathy - I appreciate your kind words.

I agree that it's a horrible thing to see sad children and those living on the streets. It makes us feel grateful for what we have.

This particular girl was so different from the others because of her lack of reaction..I found that upsetting. Thankfully, most of the kids I came across were very animated and seemed happy despite their living conditions.

unfortunately this is what happens in india -- sad as it is -- hopefully she is okay today and for days to come -- they stare in nothing -- hoping that life never treats them like this ever again -- later days
