Oh, just with photoshop.
Basically I just put the main color down, then a darker shade and a highlight. And then just smudge them together.

Well, the Photoshop CD actually came with my tablet I bought, along with some other random program.
You can always try a 30 day free trial of it, or use Paint.NET/SAI, which are free programs that work pretty similar.
