Description Hello guys ^^

Finally done :3
After yesterday was a mess, so I could finish it only for today ^^

This is a commission made for one of the SW:TOR players on the forum ^^ Its his character, set in the Sacking of Coruscant. And yes it is Malgus in the background with the defeated Jedi ^^

Tried to totally mimic the scene from the movie more or less, not an exact copy. This is the first drawing I've made such a serious background and surrounding I think Kinda dark, but I like the feel to it :3

EDIT: Fixed a lot silly mistakes (like I havent finished the other half of the belt XD) + most importantly fixed how Malgus and the Jedi look in the background :3 More fitting ^^

Let me know what you think ^^
Full work time: about 20-21h

Tried to re-build the scene from this point of view, ofc, I'm not that good at drawing buildings and stuff, but still I think I did a good job
And that intro is just way cool :3

I saw your ask for critique in the forums.

I'd say you do rather know what you want and are going for it full pelt, which is great.

But you seem to pay more care and attention to some areas than others. The figures and any area with detail is painted with great passion but then you seem to get a bit fuzzy and lazy in other areas in between. I find the lightsabers and any clothing bits very fuzzy and naive as well as out of focus bits.

If you paint always with a hard edge brush you might have areas with lower detail but the will be less fuzzy. A Painting is not a photograph or game still, it has it's own unique qualities but fuzzy soft areas just look underworked as opposed to low depth of field like they do in a photo or a game.

If you check out arts like this [link] and [link] which both contain areas of low object detail in the backgrounds they both are able to retain the interest even though the detail is elsewhere. One with lots of textured brushes and the other with painty strokes and colour. Two different ways of dealing with the same issue.

Again something like this [link] uses strong colour and texture to 'fill in' the negative space, but not draw your attention away from the characters.

These are all things unique to painting, and what makes it fabulous as opposed to just a recreation of a scene. Make the scene all the better for painting it.

Actually my problem mostly is that I dont really know what the heck to do with the background Since I havent learned how to do them well, I tend to try and draw what I think is good x)
Ok, sometimes taking the easy way out and make it foggy-blurry X)

I always tried to portray the scenes as if they would be out of a movie shot from real life. While true, they could use some sharper lines and tones/highlights
I think the approach of how I solve the things come from the fact that I learned on my own. Some mistakes gone implemented into my routine it seems... Eh x)

Well, all I can do, is to try and fix these up. Never painted before on a canvas (real life) too much, was always a pencil + paper guy xD I think it boils down to composition I think?
Since... painting something blurred some stuff sharp makes the eye wonder on the picture in a way the artist would want to.
I try to do that but seems like I mess up ? xD

Right now, my biggest concern is composition, color use and... well these two mostly.
Ideas ? Any hint would be welcome ^^

For backgrounds it's simply a case of slowing down and thinking "if this were a real place, what would be in it." Perhaps doing some research.

Say it's a Warehouse (even a sci fi/fantasy one) you can look up real warehouses and what kind of structure is there, what kind of items, what's on the wall, what you can steal ideas wise and turn it into a fantasy/sci-fi alternative etc. It's the little details that make a background interesting. Like a pipe that no only is a pipe but it maybe has a direction of flow arrow, and a vent or something. It's still a pipe but it's better and more interestingly real.

Composition and colour is down to looking at your favourite artists and what they do, where there composition is or what colours they're using in a broad sense (like just reds and greens) because you'll find most art is actually created with limited colours. Esp the effective stuff.

A trick for composition is to really really look at the placement of objects within a scene. Such as is a figure 1/3 of the way in and the other figure 2/3 of the way in? What does this do to the image? Why does it make it look good? Is one of the figures darker? What about the lighting, does it effect how you feel? If you like movies, pause movies and think about that scene. What's happening in that scene and how does the visual set up of the place you paused it enhance that. Is it sad, romantic, nostalgic? All these emotions are enhanced by colour, composition etc and so simply observing things you admire and applying them to your own work (AKA stealing them) is the way forward for any artist.

Try to study from images you are so in love with it hurts. Learn from the best not the mediocre.

I wrote a more in depth comment on colour here that might be relevant
[link]

As for the whole self taught thing? Banish it from your mind. We're all self taught in the end. You're only as good as your art not your training. If you want to be good, and feel good, just make good stuff and make no excuses, you just make yourself feel bad if you believe others have some 'advantage' you don't.
No one sits down with a teacher who guides their hand and says "do this do that" and becomes a better artist. If they do then they're just doing their teacher's art by proxy, not their own.

What any decent teacher will do is what I've just said to you. They'll tell you to study art, and art you think is amazing. They might suggest work to you or help you with ideas or composition on one piece, but they won't be there for the rest of your life, and every piece is different. Mentors and Tutors are fleeting cheer squads and yes helpful, but in the end you learn what you want to learn. I've known people who went through art school and came out the same way they went in, and people who did not go and who grew a lot more than I have. So you learn what you want from knowing what it is you want to make, hanging your pride and doing everything you can to get there.

Apologise that it took so long to get back to you
All I can say is... wow
I really appreciate your comment, was really helpful. The hints and tips are definitely something I'll look into ^^

The last part was that helped me out the most however
I always thought that being a self-taught artist, makes me know less, have lesser skills compared to the ones that finished a good art school. Good to know, this is not the case

Your reply was everything I was hoping for to get when I posted that critique request on the forum boards
Thank you ^^

Oh, and a bit late, but Happy New Year
Cheers ^^

I found when I was at art school that a lot of my fellow students would sit around and wait for tutors to tell them how to be better. They'd wait for someone to say "why don't you do this" or "do that" when in the end I found the best teachers are the ones who throw roadblocks at you and go "well what are you going to do now, I stole your watercolour box" which forces you outside your comfort zone. So in the end someone with Art Training does have the advantage of perhaps better puzzle solving skills but sometimes is always waiting for someone to tell them what to do.

I for example struggled when I left Art School to know what to make. I'd spent 4 years being told what to draw suddenly it was just me, and it was like I went backwards before I found my feet and became my own person. So there are advantages to self study as well in that you are always on your own feet. In the end it's what you do with what you know, now where you learned it.

I'm glad I was helpful to you. To me the most helpful critique is not about an individual piece but things to help in the long run and what I endeavour to provide ^^.

Happy new year to you too
