Personality: Joyce can only be properly described as “crabby” because rarely has anyone ever seen a sincere smile on the woman’s face. Most assume it’s just because she’s become a crotchety old woman and give her a wide radius while praying to the heavens that she won’t be the one to treat them come the time they may need it. Little do they know that she’s perfectly content with people keeping their distance from her, and keeps up her grumpy façade because it gets her quite a bit of peace and quiet that she appreciates.

The only real reason she joined the war was because she already worked as a nurse at her city’s hospital, and since she knew that with war would come wounded soldiers, and that would call for more medical staff to treat them. When told she was to be given a Pokémon, however, she almost quit her job on the spot, but somehow managed to refrain from doing so. She didn’t stop voicing her disapproval though, openly objecting and claiming that a Pokémon had no place within a hospital. In the end she chose her ekans after scheming up a plan and intended to use him to test that plan out, which began her experiments to make and harvest ekans and, eventually, Arbok antivenom.

Backstory: When Joyce was twelve she was diagnosed with Werner Syndrome, a disorder that caused her to physically age much faster than normal. At first she rather liked it, feeling mature over her peers for quite some time. But then her “prime” passed, and she began to lose her “youth” in her mid twenties, appearing to most like a woman in her late fifties. It was then that her mood swung from social and personable to sour and unfriendly.

She claims that people were partially to blame, because when they found out her real age, then her disorder, they’d either shy away or become sympathetic and before long enough was enough. Joyce personally didn’t give a rattata’s tail how sorry they felt for her. She’d gotten over her disorder when she was still a kid; so living with it had become normal for her. Having people tip-toe around her quickly drove her insane, and she quickly found a solution; if no one likes you, they won’t pity you. So she seemed to almost instantly morph into the sour woman she is now, and her plan worked. People backed off, and she was free to live her life without the irritation of “ignorant buffoons”

She became a nurse mostly because of the time she spent at the hospital because of her disorder. Being exposed to the life of a nurse she quickly felt a desire to be one, and after graduating from college with a Medical Degree she managed to get a job at her city’s hospital. Since then she’s been working there as a nurse, ad joined the call to arms when the war broke out. When she first selected her pokémon ekans it was because of a side experiment she wanted to test out. She did some studying up on antivenom and made an effort to learn the basics of it, knowing that with the war would come venomous and poisonous pokémon, and the wounded soldiers and pokémon would need antivenom. She also, since receiving Lou, has been slowly, but steadily immunizing herself against Lou’s venom for the sake of being safe if the snake decided to lash out at her when she was milking him for venom.

Lou is as cold-blooded as reptiles can get, and has so far shown no attachment to Joyce since the two were paired up. He seems to have a vacant personality at first glance, but he shows his true colors whenever Joyce tries to milk him for his venom, whereupon he becomes particularly nasty and unfriendly; sometimes even going the distance to lash out at her with his fangs. He much prefers to laze around in the sun all day though, absorbing as much warmth into him as possible.

When not kept in his pokéball, Lou can be found slithering closely behind, or beside Joyce as she works, and if she ever manages to find time to sit down, her coils himself around her feet.

Since evolving into an Arbok his violent tenancies have receded quite a bit. Joyce just figures it’s because he grew in size so dramatically that his violence was able to spread through him so evenly. Now he’s forced to lie about outside the medward because he no longer fits inside Joyce’s office. When standing his full height he reaches a good seventeen feet high, and that’s only with half his body held upright. From nose to tail he measures forty-two feet in length.

Nevei | Fearow | Mild | Keen Eye | Female

Nevei is a silent observer. She has the steady patience to stand unmoving for hours, her gaze fixed quietly on whatever it is she is observing. She doesn’t seem to show much concern over having been pried from her natural environment and hovered over by strange hairless apes.

The moment Joyce released the bird from her pokeball she hasn’t gone in since, and even if the woman makes an attempt to get her to return she finds a way to resist until eventually she gave up trying and just let her roam free. Of course her version of “roaming free” meant sitting quietly in the corner or in a tree, watching activities around her with a scrutinizing gaze.

She keeps her distance around Lou, not fully knowing what to expect from the moody serpent. When she first arrived in Joyce’s custody he nearly killed her- and probably would have succeeded if she hadn’t been quicker in taking to the air. Since then she has made sure to be out of striking reach of him whenever possible just to be on the safe side, no matter how lazy he’s feeling.
