I was very nicely added to a page were pagan altars are show cased and only now realise how insanely large and overcrowded mine actually is and it shows no signs of slowly in terms of expansion. I know I will soon have to build a larger one, where oh where will it end?
Yikes I am an Egyptian and Sumerian God hoarder

I have a small altar/shrine to Athena (and another one to Hecate since my fiancee is a devotee of hers) and it's enough but yeah, this one's amazing... I wonder how big the next one will be...

Wow, your rituals must be really interesting!
I just remembered that we also had a "common" altar for various rituals that were not necessarily devoted to Athena and/or Hecate... But there is no space for a third altar in our new flat :/
At least we managed to do our first handfasting there

well beside my main altar I still have two overflow altars All three have their rituals.Β
Ah sweet regarding the handfasting. I will be officiating one next year from some friends.Β

Nice! We started using our Athena and Hecate altars for rituals some years ago and it really suits us. But who knows, we might make a temp altar in the future for something not entirely dedicated to these two goddesses.
Thank you we are actually having our political/"legal" marriage this spring (pagan weddings are not officially recognised in Greece), but we also think of renewing our handfasting in January too. By the way, what does "officiating" mean?

tamarazeegers In reply to Mits-Giotix [2019-10-26 12:26:59 +0000 UTC]

Officiating means I will be the high priestess binding my two friends together. I have done so for several of my friends. Weddings actually came from handfastings which is why I think it so weird they are not seen as official, but who knows maybe in the future. So whereabouts in Greece are you from?

Oh, nice! My fiancee's mom did our handfasting back then, although she was not officiated; it just sounded like a nice idea back then.
Well, Greece has a long history with orthodox Christianity. The Constitution says that we have a complete freedom of religion but the orthodox church is so well-entrenched in social, political and educational matters that "religious freedom" is just a dream (it's also one of the reasons that, while I am a pagan, I have strong pro-atheism views when it comes to society. Separation of church and state and all that).
Lavrys (one of the ancient greek religion groups here) tries to makeΒ  their marriage rituals official but I do not remember if they were successful. I want to say that they were but I'll have to check this out. If it's true then it happened about a year or two ago.
We live in Athens, although we actually came from other parts of the country. My fiancee's family is from Patras and my mother is from Santorini (her own granddad hailing from the greek refugees of Pontos in northern Turkey) and my father from a village in central Greece. I also traveled a lot throughout Greek cities because of my dad's previous job (he is an army officer; retired now).

Yeah I too wish religion and state were separate. Though I am pagan I have friends from all religions, sexual preferences, races, greed, age etc and believe in freedom for all. Religion and politics is a bad combo. History proves that. Though marriage here is only official when you go to a registry office which at least takes the religion out of it, I wish handfasting was official. I wrote my friends handfasting ritual as I do with all my rituals and spells.Β

Yeah, we are pagans too, but we believe that organised religion is problematic; for example, another priestΒ  was arrested two days ago because he was raping his partner's daughter. The community of his village knew it but didn't do anything because he was a priest (and because the girl and her mom were from Bulgaria).Β
I know what you mean, we too have friends of various religious, political and national backgrounds. In our time, freedom and equal rights are the only way forward.
The whole registry thing is required here, too; unless you do a christian marriage. We even had a phone call from the people in the town hall's registry office asking us "why didn't you write 'orthodox christian' in your forms? aren't you christians?". Good fucking grief.
Official handfasting would be nice, but in the end of the day it was a personal matter for us. Even the political marriage is done mostly for some rights (and for any future kids' rights).
Aw, that sounds so nice! It must have been an amazing handfasting

Here even a church wedding is not legal here, they still have to go to registry office.Β

I hate people hiding behind and justifying terrible behaviour in the name of any religion. Though I do not like violence, he would be a very dead priest if it was my daughter. And actually my neighbours would need to run too if they knew and let it happen. Utterly disgusting behaviour which has nothing to do with Christianity.Β

Yeah people marry here too just so that should one die at least the other and any offspring is protected.

The last handfasting I wrote will not happen till April next year though

It was not the first time to happen. Unfortunately most people are christians, here, and most of them are brain washed by years of having mandatory christian theology courses in public schools.
It's weird, you know; I remember the first time I read the bible, back in high school. It was what made me run away from that religion (I used to be a rather conservative christian myself).Β

My grand parents were very religious, my dad rebelled by changing church and never made us go, so we were the black sheep of the black sheep. Though I have read the bible to me it raised questions as so many things made no sense . So i read the Torah, Talmud, Koran, Hindu and buddist books of faith, book of the dead of ancient Egypt/Tibet etc etc. Digging deeper and deeper to find the answers to my queries. Until recently I read the Enuma Elish, still not the the source but as close as we are able to get at the moment and things finally started to make sense. Hence I love ancient history and why my novels always include history.Β

My grandparents were very religious, too, but it turned out that most people in my family right now are either atheists or not particularly devout. My fiancee was a neopagan pretty much her entire life, and her family mostly consists of atheists/nonreligious people too.
That being said, I remember reading a neutral book about religions and their elements/focal points of their dogma. It was very interesting.

Though I call myself Wiccan, pagan would be more accurate at the moment as I follow the old religions nowadays and have moved even beyond most pagan religions. Though as they are all linked I think it easier to tell people that when they ask as I do not like to try and seem like I trying to convert or get them to understand. To me religion is very personal and my friends are from all walks of life, race, sexuality, gender and religions. I respect them and they respect me and thats all that is important.Β

I agree about religion being a deeply personal matter. Unfortunately when one tries to shove religion to other people (or communities), trouble arises. We still need to learn how to be respectful of each others' characteristics.
...except for racists, sexists and child molesters. Fuck those people.
