There is someone who also does amazing dragons. If you want to improve perhaps you could swap ideas, she doesn't make the scales usually and it really gives your dragon character.
I will LOVE to see this in other colors, painted or other clays.

oriental is now a derogatory term. you aren't allowed to say it anymore you might offend somebody. I strongly recommend you change the title of this deviation, since it is such a beautiful work, I just don't like seeing it tarnished by such filth

*blinks* Quite honestly, where I'm from, this has never been considered an offensive term. At least not as a descriptor--I'd certainly never call a *person* an "oriental"--I won't even call them "asian" if I know where someone is actually from, since it's a little offensive to lump all asian ethnicities together like they're the same thing.
But even in regions where oriental is a derogatory term, it's offensive when you use to to describe PEOPLE. I don't think anyone has ever thought it offensive to call an oriental rug an oriental rug--it's a descriptor of certain stylistic traits originating from a general region. "Oriental dragon" is still a widely used term, since dragons aren't people, and artwork depicting dragons certainly aren't people. Where I am it's often considered *more* PC than "chinese dragon", since dragons in that style are certainly not exclusive to China, and already too many people think that "asian" equals "china". I've honestly never encountered anyone who found this usage offensive before. Thank you for the food for thought.

I've already reported this as a racially hateful deviation since you've refused to change the title. I can't believe someone would be so stubborn about something that is so clearly offensive

I knew someone would BITCH about the title. I love how easily offended everyone is these days.

so what do you call oriental rugs!!! Your silly. Political Correctness can go too far sometimes. You need to lighten up her intent was never to insult. But the Orient is a place therefore items from that part of the world could be described as Oriental. Is the item beautiful? yes . Then how could you describe it as offensive? I think you need to get a hobby or go for a walk. there are alot more truly offensive things in the world. This piece is beautiful and only makes the world a better place. I'm sure you were truly to help but I think that if we let the piece for itself that is enough.

Wow. And I can't believe what an arrogant blowhard you are. I never said I wasn't changing anything, I said I was thinking about what you said--and THANKED you for the food for thought. But you do not have the right to tell me what to do, and to accuse me of being racist for using a word that, where I was raised, is not, is offensive. All my life, I have bought books on "oriental dragons", and "oriental dragon" figurines (even Windstone dragons, which are about the most famous dragon sculpts out there, call them "oriental dragons". Have you emailed the company to complain?). I took a semester of japanese, and MY SENSEI called them oriental dragons.
In other words, the word is NOT "clearly offensive" to me, and why should I trust what some random person on the internet tells me? Should I believe it if someone on DA tells me "western" is offensive now, and I can't call dragons western dragons anymore? Should I just do whatever anyone says at the snap of a finger? I'm not changing anything until I've gotten to do my own research. But even after explaining my reasoning to you, you jump the gun, almost as if you're looking to pick the fight.
I used a word that in my cultural region is not derogatory (newsflash: the culture where you are is not representative of the whole world), with completely inoffensive intentions, and I listened to your complaint with open ears. And before I even have a chance to form an opinion on an issue that is completely new to me, you start accusing me of racism. But I guess you didn't want me to form my own opinion...yours must be the only opinion that matters.

I really love your sculptures! Is there any way I could talk you into doing a tutorial on how you make them? I want to make some sculpey pieces myself but I'm not entirly sure where to start!
This may sound a little stalker-ish, but I even have one of your dragon shots as my background. They are so cute!

Do you know all the anatomy of the dragon? or do you get like a template thing to get the basic shapes of it?
Or is it that you can draw them so well you can just sculpture them well?

tallydragon In reply to O-d-a-s [2009-02-10 15:42:01 +0000 UTC]
Hah, well, I think I actually sculpt dragons better than I draw them. ^_^; My mind words in a 3-D way. I make up the dragon anatomy as I go along, but what helps me is that I'm overall well versed in real life anatomy of various animals--in fact, I teach an anatomy lab in my university. When you know the real life structures well, it's easier to make up a fantasy creature that looks realistic. ^_^

tallydragon In reply to LightoftheHeart [2009-01-10 02:15:19 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! ^_^ Yup, that's basically it. I just gently pat the scale down. With really small scales it's hard to shape them ahead of time, but you develop a feel for how big the teeny-tiny ball of clay must be for the size scale you want, so in that case you can add the ball and then shape it afterwards by pressing on it.
