Can we get rice cakes like that here in the US? I've always wanted to try one.

You can make one if you can find the right stuff to make it. Luckily where I live there are a loooot of Asian shopping areas with a ton of imported goods and we can make them. Also, if you're super lucky you can find a restaurant that specializes in Asian cuisine that might have it. (that's a perk to living around a huge Korean/Japanese community!)

Pretty simple to do yourself once you gather the ingredients. It's litteraly basicaly salted and vinegrated rice with something inside (cooked fish like salmon or tuna, japanese macerated plum...) , and eventually some nori to wrap it up. In fact, what would be the most expensive would pobably be the japanese rice, though you can probably (not sure, since my grandma always sends us some rice from Japan) round rice to do the trick.
The hardest part is making it having its signature shape.
