Description The other TV show eating up some of my free time... Game of Thrones.

[Spoilers!]I’d like to think that in some parallel imaginary universe Eddard Stark survived his time as the king’s hand, went back to Winterfell and they all lived happily ever after and eventually Snow visited from the Wall too and Ned sat down and told him about his mother. Now that wouldn’t be very interesting to watch but here’s a Stark family portrait from happier times that they never got to see. [/spoilers]

Pencil and watercolour.

I keep staring at this trying to think of the perfect words to describe this picture and I can't. I'm at a loss.

Lol I have the same problem with my work. Everyone says they like it but all I see are what could be improved.

Could you do a tutorial on how you draw and paint your work? OR even just a step-by-step guide with pictures. Thankyou x

I would also love to see this. Your work inspired me to go out and get some watercolours but I have no idea where to start, do you do a pencil sketch first or just go straight in with the paint etc. So many questions

I almost always start with a pencil sketch and then just either paint over it as it is, tidy it up a bit with an eraser first or completely redraw the line art with ink/markers before colouring it in with watercolour. Love your mandragora-avatar btw!

Hi thanks for replying
If you ink the lines first, then colour, doesn't the paint makes the lines blur?
Thank you He's a Gentleman-dragora

I don't like inking over watercolour because the paper gets a different grainier texture with the paint on top and the pen nib just doesn't glide as nicely. If I'm inking with brush then yeah, either way works. Ink shouldn't bleed if you use permanent ink and let it completely dry first. Having said that, I use winsor&newton inks and not all are fully waterproof and of course it doesn't say which are on the tin (except for the black and white which are pretty much indestructible once dry). For example there's a picture of Tinkerbell here in my gallery that's a perfect example of their green ink not being that reliable but for the most part they turn out ok and once I find one that works well I tend to stick with it.

Hmmm... is Indian ink permanent or should I look at those winsorandnewton inks. Do you use a fountain pen for inks or a brush? I'm not sure I could get the same amount of detail without a pen >w<

(also thank you for the advice and replying )

Afaik "indian ink" is just the English way of saying "drawing ink" and Winsor&Newton is just one of many manufacturers but their inks are so easily available here I tend to opt for them most of the time. And I *think* they have the widest colour range available. Pelikan, DalerRowney etc, all make great drawing inks too (and I'm sure many other companies besides, those just happen to be ones in my ink drawer at the moment), Google them up or just go visit your nearest art/craft supply shop and see what they have in stock. I even have a big bottle of Chinese writing ink I got for a pound at the oriental supermarket that is totally not waterproof but great for just doing black and white things and washes.

When working with drawing ink I use an old-fashioned ink nib or a very fine brush. They do take a bit of getting used to though as you can't push upwards or it'll just splatter everywhere. I'm doing a sort of a drawing progression guide at the moment and will try include my tools in the pics.

I went hunting for ink today but both art shops I went to had sold out so I've ordered some from eBay for now and I'll have to keep using my normal pen for now

I saw your guide, it was definitely helpful and it was nice to see my pictures aren't the only ones that get attacked by the scanner ha ha

I couldn't decide if I was happy or unreasonably angry about the fact that you left Jon Snow out of the Stark Family Portrait, but I've decided that you kept with the Stark Family dynamic in leaving him out. Since, of course, everyone unquestionably bends to Catelyn's preference which is the exclusion of him when ever possible.

TaijaVigilia In reply to Vexalynn [2012-04-21 08:27:14 +0000 UTC]

I personally like Snow and dislike Catelyn's hostility towards him but this was a family portrait in my head and few years of drawing Disney princesses has taught me that whoever you include/exclude is always the wrong one for someone.
