Description
This is, of course, Nanase from El Goonish Shive [link]The last couple years of the strip have been hard for her. She nearly had a nervous breakdown when she realized that she was, in fact, gay. Despite trying to keep it private, all but one of her friends found out without her knowing. She finally confessed her feeling to the girl she loves [link] so we can hope things will get better for her.
I imagined, sometime in the future, one of her friends getting her this shirt as a gag gift. Probably Justin.
I love the expression I captured on her face. She looks to me like she's just tried the shirt on and is laughing as someone snaps her picture.I'm really happy with how this came out, except for the color. So, I'm leaving it open. Here [link] is my original lineart for this piece. If anyone would like to try their hand at coloring it, feel free!

I can sympathize with your condition.
Apparently others can too. When I was looking for references for the shirt online, I found 4 pictures of guys wearing one and only one with a girl.

Yes, drawn by a mouse, but with help. The head is a character from a comic strip that I took from here [link] (4th panel) I just blew it up to the size I needed and then traced over it with thin lines. Then I took the body off of a real-life picture and, again, traced the lines. I combined the two and then colored it in. Hard, but not as hard as drawing it free-hand.

Well... I picture this happening in two or three years from current events in the story. Given the ratio of real-time to strip time, I think it more likely you'll die of old age first.

Hmm. I'll start out with the good - all of the colors seem accurate (sorry, gonna have to disagree with you there =^.^= ) and the proportions of her face are on target for the style. In addition, you've pretty much got her hair down. Good job there.
But there are a few simple things you can do to improve your drawings that people usually miss. For example, see how one side of her neck is flat? There's actually a muscle there that links the neck, back, and shoulder called the trapezius muscle that creates more of a curve from the side of the neck to the middle of the shoulder, like what you did for the other side, only it would show more. Some research on that muscle can really help.
You also may want to try making her waist a little bit narrower and her right shoulder (our left) shorter so that it'll be even with the other one. That would help make her look a little more feminine.

Okay, first, it's not that I dislike the colors I used, its more that I'm a babe in the woods when it comes to shading, etc. I like the basic pic enough that I wanted people who could make it look even more realistic run wild. I was insanely pleased with myself in getting the head proportional to the body, and as I said to Miss Circe, the hair is accurate becasue I traced it.
As for the neck details... you're right of course. I may try to improve that in future pieces if it seems appropriate. My way of working forces me to straddle that line between realistic and cartoony. So it's sometime a toss-up if I want to go into anatomical details or not.
As for her body, I kind of like it how it is. Nanase is hardly a delicate flower, so as long as she looks female, I don't mind her looking like an athletic female. I see what you're talking about with the shoulder, however. Hmmmm... Something to think about.

I know what you mean about colors - shading is really, really hard to learn at first. I still haven't really managed to, honestly, or else I'd try to help you out more. It's a good sign that you're able to recognize both when you've done things well and when you haven't, though. And even if you traced the hair, at least you have some idea of how to do it.
I see what you mean about the body, too. I guess I'm just not really sure how much martial arts would change someone's muscles. Any advice on this would be appreciated. =^.^=
Anyway, I really do hope it helps. Just keep practicing, and if you have any questions I wouldn't mind answering them~.

I assume this is a year or so in the future when Nanase is much more OK with who she is. Given his past, I doubt Justin would give her this shirt till he thought she would take it as a joke.
And I can't take that much credit for capturing Nanase's look. Like most of my work, it's derrivative. Take a look at her in the 4th panel here: [link] Basically, I blew up her head and then traced over it with thin lines, erasing Dan's original work. The body is a trace from a random model off the internet. (Would you believe how hard it was to find a picture of a girl wearing that shirt?! Four pictures of guys with it and only two girls!) Originally I was going to used one of Nanase's "embarrassed" expressions, but when I saw how well this look worked I was glad I didn't find one I could use. Also the model was wearing a t-shirt; but Nanase seems much more the tank-top type.

I find myself wondering if "unexpectedly out of the closet" will be a recurring theme in Nanase's life. I can just see he worried about going to school with Ellen, not wanting to be out to everyone yet, only to find out that everyone at school already assumed she was a lesbian because of her friendship with Justin.
...at least, that's why I imagine she's laughing in this pic.
