Description Solace

There’s something to be said about finding solace in the little things life has to offer. Especially when you’re surrounded by darkness and you’re vulnerable (maybe even in your underwear), but spoiled off your pretty little ass. Maybe the only light you see isn’t at the end of a tunnel or peaking out from behind a cloud. Maybe it’s a means to an end. Maybe it’s lighting the way to that one little thing that brings you comfort in your time of need. Maybe it’s a person you’d normally neglect, or an inanimate object you’ve secretly attached meaning to, or perhaps just a nicotine-craving that needs to be satisfied. It’s those little things you should appreciate and find solace in. And if you can’t sit back and find solace in the little things in life… I say you’re missing the point.

Etc.

I'm pretty satisfied with this drawing because I think it shows the most significant improvement in my drawings since I restarted a few months ago. That, I owe to all of the people here on DA and elsewhere who have offered me their creative critiques and input on my strengths and weaknesses. Granted, this one's far from perfect, but I don't have as many complaints as I normally would I guess. My biggest problem is with the hand, particularly the jewellery, but what can you do. I think this one suits it's title better than any of the others to date though.

This image appealed to me to draw for several reasons. Firstly was the practical, in that it's a sharp contrast between black and white, and the darkness in the background--both of which I don't have much experience with, so I wanted the practise. Also, there's something very appealing about a woman in a bra wearing jewellery and lighting a cigarette. It's a very suave and contemporary little concept. The kind of thing one might find hanging in a Montreal Cafe.

Thanks to Kedralynn for the original stock photo, as it was a pleasure to work with. Her stock account has an excellent collection of photos with lots of potential for all different kinds of work, so I strongly suggest checking it out here: [link] . You can access her main (non-stock) account through that page as well, which has an impressive collection of photography.

The medium is the same as usual: 0.7 mm HB mechanical pencil and paper smudging sticks. This time, however, I employed the smudging sticks a lot more than usual. Actually I hardly used my fingers at all. The sticks result in a much cleaner final product, especially in the areas with lots of shading. Although I'm not usually a big fan of cleanliness, it worked out for this one because of the sharp contrast and simple shading work. I will soon be investing in a more diverse collection of graphite grades, because you can only take HB so far. It is, after all, the preferred pencil grade of most elementary school children when drawing giant letters.

Impressive pencil work. Your shading and perspectives are very nice. Honestly beyond you do more speed drawings to increase your hand-eye cordination, and maybe having you read more art history/philosophy, your pretty much beyond my realm of advice, great gallery. Wish I had your calliber of drawing, perhaps some day.

Bravo! Everything in it is so neat! your hand is soo well drawn (I can't imagine the work behind). Idem for her neck and every part of her face. Too bad half of her hair is hidden... N e way, Great job!

I love the way the figure stands apart from, yet blends into, the background.

It makes for a very striking piece.

Great work on the hands. Also the character of your subject is captured. The dark background made the subject pops out and made the art more alive due to the contrast.

I think the background should be all pitch black... it looks to me like the top of her head is fading into the background. I like the hair that's... like under her ear and behind the neck the other needs some work... like you need to practice more on just the single strands of hair or the... small groupings(for lack of a better word). why she has the cigarette under her thumbs and the flame is outside of it, is beyond me. The fact that you can see her other hand a little but NONE of the other arm not even fading away bothers me, and she has not visable body.... I do like the cleam shading though and the hands are done decently well....

Very beautyfull and very well executed. but suddenly it struck me, is that her thumbnail falling off or is she puting her thumb on fire?
