no, the maori were the indigenous people of New Zealand.
netherland was the first WHITE country to find NZ.

The Maori race didn't origanally come from new zealand though. Maori found Newzealand and they originally come from a pasific island/s that they called Hawikii?(spelling...) Able Tasman first saw new zealand but didn't dock because he saw the maori's on the shore (they were acting agressivlt to him) so he didn't dock. then James cook was the first white man to step foot on Nz. (but i don't really see why it should only count for white people....isn't that a bit racist..?)Also England wasn't the only country that tried to colonise Nz the chinese and french were very prominant in trying to win Nz (The firt court house in New Zealand was french) However it was the English that first set up an agreement with the maori promising to protect them if the would "become one with england" and the maori agreed THE END!
Trust me ~ we learn our countries history in Nz (no one else will)

i do know my countrys history.
also, its hardly racist. they WERE the only white men, and it was never a 'become one with england' as we didnt really join them, New Zealand is an independant country, but still recognizes (omg. spelling ) the Queen as ours aswell.

well done for blood,do ya live here? i'm not a true Nz through blood and i waas born in Australia but i only go to school here and i seem to know more about Nz history.
no i mean it's racist to only base a countries finding on the person who found it being white.
and yes we did become one with england as we gave the sovereignty of New Zealand to the British Crown. New Zealand evolved as one of the British Dominions, colonies within the British Empire which gradually established progressively greater degrees of self-rule.
(in short we use to be a colony, now we are not.)
any way what i ment with become one with england was just the treaty that said england would protect Nz if nz would recognise there queen (/government) as our own) and i think you'll find to the same affect this is what happened with most colonised countries (well not Au..) and we have to help england if a war happenes.
yes i have watched whale Rider..not really sure what that has to do with this..i have watched many other new zealand films aswell including boy, 2 cars one night , egal vs shark, second hand wedding , fallen sparrows,and others

i was born in NZ but i have moved to aus a few years ago. i miss it back there, the weather heres to hot for me.

TL;DR we were a colony, then we went -mostly-independant, and we help england during wars and such.

This was the stupidest and yet /greatest/ fight I have ever read on DA. The Maori did not sprout from the ground, The Maori clearly found it first. Legend is LEGEND. The Maori came from Micronesia, more indirectly from Taiwan.
And yes, New Zealand was and still is under the British Crown via the Commonwealth. The Queen owns New Zealand. We are her people.
That was just BRILLIANT. The Aussie born knows more about NZ than the "true-blood" who spells like a yank. Cheers.

I have to recognize that the drawing looks cute
however,
as long as I know he discovered aothearoa, well, a random netherlander and his ship did, but the maoris tryed to eat them, after escaping he never returned to that land before it was completely colonized by the brits (who somehow managed not to become a dinner). So he left no people in the land that could form a nation.
Also, New Zealand has england's eyebrows and eyes.
