Sorry about my amateur and newbie question but, do you use a filter to take a long exposure photo right? if it so, which kind of filter would you recommend?

I don't think it's a newbie question If you don't ask how do you find out?

I only use a UV filter to protect my lens (I do a lot of nature shots and I don't need sand/dirt/fingerprints all over my lens). I don't even have any other filters (though I pinch my husband's polariser occasionally)....

To take this shot, I put the aperture down to 22, that makes the shutter opening really small and lets in less light (especially good for day time long exposures) and adjusted the exposure level down 1 to 2 stops (I can't remember which). That means that the shutter can stay open for longer to get the movement of the water without getting over-exposed and turning everything a lovely shade of white

I hope that helped!

Thanks a lot! It really help, I have a normal filter, but last Thursday I took a photo, following those set up, f/22 1/10" iso 100 and it was white, totally white. So i thought i might need another filter, like polarizer or similar. I so want to do a photo like yours *cries*

Shade does help too... and not shoting at midday (Found that one out the hard way) But try the underexposing, it works a treat! You can ramp it down until your shot works or just slowly shorten your timer (but who wants to do that? )

I've found a CIR-PL filter from my father in law and I just place it in front of my lens (they are different dimensions so i just used my hand to try) and then i took a photo in 2" f/22 and I could see! so yay!!! thank you for your advises and explanation, you are the best!!

Amazing... the long exposure worked perfectly. If you don't mind me asking, how long have you been doing shots like this?

I got my dslr in August 2011, so I've been doing it for 16 months. I'm glad you liked it

Thanks I love the time exposure on water... my mates just walk away from me now when we get to a stream, they know I'll be there for the next half an hour
