Details from the Arch of Constantine in Rome.

The sculptures for the Arch of Constantine were looted from previous monuments, largely those of the Severan period.

Here we can see the emperor adressing the troops (adlocutio), in front of the standards. The soldiers wear scale-mail armour (lorica squamata) and segmented armour (lorica segmentata), and going by the archaic helmet of the soldier on the left, he may be a Praetorian. On the second pannel, we witness a suovetaurilia, a sacrifice of a pig (sus), a sheep (ovis) and a bull (taurus), which was one of the top sacrifices a god could receive. The animals are shown surrounded by vexillia (with the draped pieces of cloth), signa and aquila (the legionary eagle).
