If you start out with a black and white value sketch, before using colour on it, try changing it to a monochromatic picture first. Β If you use a burnt sienna type colour for an underlay, it's easier to add colours on top and have them look right.

The ref I used was a cosplay of a character called Irma from Queen's Blade. Β The rest was explained by CanisLupusMysticus.

Sycra, I think one problem with your drawings, is that the heads are WAYY to huge. I think it would look a lot better if you made the heads smaller.

Only if the artist chooses to in order to get their style closer to what they aim. But just because a style is purposely anatomically incorrect does not make it any "worse" or "in need of improvement."

Yeah, I make heads big because it's sort of in my tastes. Β Sometimes I get them too big and it's not within my taste... Β If I were to judge this again, I would say, the head is a bit too big for my liking... Β But overall, I would also say that I like giving characters bigger heads and hands than normal, and I often give them skinny torsos and necks and legs, but thick calves and forearms. Β It's just a matter of personal taste. Β
So in terms of your comment, I think it would be more accurate to say that you think it would look better to YOU if the head wasn't so big, but not necessarily that it would look better period. Β Although, as I mentioned, in this case I would agree with you that the head is a bit too big. Β I will try to make the heads a size that looks better in the future, although I can't promise that they may get smaller... Β ...I may make them even bigger!

"I may make them even bigger". Haha, I like your answer, Sycra!
Personally I never thought your heads look too big because I think it matches with the other enhanced body parts of the style, you clearly can see the geometric forms of the limbs yet they have a flow that make perfect sense together in my opinion. I see your style as you mashing your artistic journey in caricature with an anime style and minimalistic geometric designs, that's why I find it so unique.

Lol, dear Sycra. I'm afraid the person who made the initial post may not have seen your message, as your response was to me. I'm in agreement that you should be able to portray your characters how you like. Make those big heads bigger for all you like; we'll still fave your artworks and think they are the shiznit. xDΒ
