Description Contest Entry for #FanArtIntegrityClub I got the Runner up Prize

Fandom Source: Princess Tutu (anime)

Name: Tatiana

Nickname: Dolly

Age: 15

Family: Miss Fletchem is her Master and Mother like figure.

Occupation: Apprentice to the local craftswoman Miss Fletchem in a small city named New Found Town. Dolly is learning how to fix mainly clocks along with, toys, dolls, furniture and other household appliances.

Strengths: Dolly has always had a special gift for making toys and dolls. The young talented apprentice is incredibly good with needle work, sculpting, wood carving, and painting. The essentials for creating puppets and dolls.

Dolly has a very caring heart, especially for children, and can always be seen telling them stories using her puppets out in front of the shop. She also has an impeccable memory and eye for detail. The words she says are always thought out and in times of distress she is quick to act.

Weaknesses: While Dolly has an eye for details, she can sometimes make simple mistakes when constructing a new doll, failing to make the strings long enough or put an adequate amount of stuffing in her toys.

Dolly is also often lost in thought, while her fingers continue to work her mind will be elsewhere. Because she is a caring person, she will also occasionally put others needs before her own putting herself into harm’s way and in so doing endangering the people she wishes to help. Another weakness is her inability to communicate well with others and her low self esteem. Her only confidence is in the toys she makes.

Special Abilities: In the beginning Dolly does not appear or believe herself to be special aside from her special toys. When Drosselmeyer finds a home in Dolly’s town a strange change begins to take place. The toys, dolls, and puppets Dolly has created begin to come to life. Whether this is a blessing or a curse Dolly has yet to decide.

Relationships With Canon Characters: Dolly does not live in Gold Crown Town so she doesn't know any of the canon character initially. The young toy maker comes into contact with Drosselmeyer and Uzura around the time her toys begin to walk and talk on their own. She later meets Ahiru and Fakir after an unfortunate event.

Story: Dolly’s life as an apprentice is business as usual until a strange old man walks into the shop front asking for assistance in fixing an old wind up clock of his. The man confesses to the girl that he has no money to pay her with, but the apprentice gladly accepts the job anyway, her kind heart wouldn’t have it any other way. The man is delighted and promises her something special in return for her troubles.

After Dolly finishes fixing the clock, a girl who calls herself Uzura comes into the shop and ends up staying with Dolly and Miss Fletchem. When the old man returns to pick up his watch, the man is overjoyed with Dolly’s work and rewards her with his name. He tells her that his name is Drosselmeyer and that she should expect a special gift from him in the morning. Dolly feels like the name Drosselmeyer is familiar, but doesn’t think on its importance until later.

In the morning, the toys, puppets and dolls that Dolly has made begin to sing and dance for her. At first Dolly is frightened, but the toys do nothing to harm her and repeatedly thank her for giving them a form to live in.

For some time Dolly enjoys the company of her new friends and life in the shop remains pleasant. Outside the shop it is another matter. Using the clock Dolly repaired as his vessel, Drosselmeyer begins to write another tragedy and the people of New Found Town unknowingly become his new characters. It isn’t until a child races into Miss Fletcher's shop that things change. Claiming to have been attack by ‘The Mouse King’ Dolly takes it upon herself to look into this matter.

That night Dolly investigates by searching the town and is attacked by ‘The Mouse King.’ The king is as black as a starless night with a coat as thick as brier thorns. Before Dolly is kidnapped by the King her toys and dolls come to protect her and fight against the evil king and his minions. In the end Dolly is saved, but at the expense of her new friends being ripped to shreds.

With tears in her eyes Dolly does her best to repair her broken creations, but try as she might she is unable to repair several of them. They are unable to dance or sing for her anymore, a lifeless husk once again. The dolls who remain try to comfort Dolly, telling her that they love her and would do anything to protect her, but Dolly does not want to see their lives torn apart so easily. She blames herself for their death.

Meanwhile, Uzura takes note of Dolly’s dismay and tells her new friend the story of Gold Crown Town. To Dolly’s horror she learns through Uzura’s tale that the same strange things that happened in Gold Crown Town are now beginning to occur in her town.

The story of tragedy is coming to life.

But what can she do against Drosselmeyer and ‘The Great Mouse King’? Desperately, Dolly goes out in search of the old man Drosselmeyer, but she cannot find him. Next she attempts to leave the town in order to ask for assistance from those who defeated ‘The Raven,’ but she is unable to leave the town and forgets briefly what she is supposed to be doing.

In a fit of desperation and fading hope Dolly returns to the shop and decides to do the only thing she knows how to do. She makes toys. With little sleep or rest, Dolly takes it upon herself to create a hero who can defeat ‘The Mouse King’ and Drosselmeyer. Dolly builds a Knight and Fairy Queen, putting her heart and soul into these complicated dolls. They are much bigger than anything she has made before and she purposefully designs them with Uzura as her model.

The end result is an answer to Dolly’s prayers, but a living nightmare for those who she has called upon. Fakir and Ahiru are forced to inhabit the bodies Dolly has made for them; the failed knight and the duck.

Now it is up to Fakir and Ahiru to end the story in order to escape their new forms, but it will not be easy. In the end Dolly will need to take responsibilities for her actions or lose the things she cares for most.

Base Story: Pinocchio and The Nutcracker

Art and Dolly are Mine

Author's Note: Surprisingly I think I spent more time coming up with Dolly's story then the picture itself. I'm just glad I finally got around to finishing an entry for this contest.

If you are interested in Fakir and Ahiru as dolls you can see them here. [link]

She was in a rush to save her dolls so she forgot to put them on.

You may feel you spent more time on the story than the pic, but the pic still has a good, spooky atmosphere to it. The silhouetted puppets in the background in particular set the scene very keenly. Likewise, I appreciate the ways you use the original stories to set up Dolly's character while staying true to "Princess Tutu"'s overall mythos and ideas. Dolly herself feels very strongly realized and well-considered; her single-minded innocence is especially nice.

Thank you so much Drawing the picture seemed more natural in a way and the story just required more effort on my part I think. The spooky atmosphere and hint of 'something more' is what drew me into Princess Tutu in the first place so I really wanted to capture that. As for Dolly's character, it was a challenge trying to make a fan character who has the qualities of a 'canon' rather than simply filling a supporting role. I am much more comfortable with making fan characters who are in the background and usually out of sight.

You're very welcome. ^_^

And yeah, I can definitely see that; fitting OC's into canon in such a way as to make them noteworthy without making them overwhelming or contradicting to the pre-existing material and characters can be VERY difficult, especially for a series which is as big on Internal Mythology as "Princess TuTu". But I think you pulled it off nicely.

Thank you, the concept is a lot of fun. There are some FC's but not many I think.

Wow, great work on the picture and story. It's creepy and cute just like it's canon inspiration. Drosselmeyer face is incredibly creepy and the lines and gears break up the background nicely. I like how you included Uzura and a close up of Dolly stuck in the gear. You seem to like drawing bare foot characters.

Thank you. As you know I've had this idea for quite some time, it might make an interesting fanfiction. Not that I would write it anytime soon. Barefoot. How does Clair get into everything. But yeah, it's suppose to show a bit of her careless side. She'll run out into the street without her coat if it means helping someone.
