Description Douglas Earle Marsh's contribution to Southern Railway express locomotive power was his series of H2 class 4-4-2 tender engines, although they were built during a period of absence due to Marsh's sicknesses by his soon to be successor, Lawson Billinton from 1911 to 1912 . These engines were developed from his earlier H1 class of 1905, and used influences from Henry Alfred Ivatt's C1 class atlantics of 1898. These engines were an instant success on expresses such as the Brighton Limited and the Southern Belle. However, they were replaced gradually by King Arthurs and  K and K1 "River" classes, meaning they were put on boat trains such as the Golden Arrow. However, after the cessation of these services, they were given other duties, but the boat train services were resumed and the H2s continued into the 1950s. One member of the class was withdrawn in 1949, and withdrawals resumed in 1956, and the last was withdrawn in 1958. None survive today, but a replica of number 32424 Beachy Head, is under construction at the Bluebell Railway using a GNR Atlantic boiler, and should be completed by next year.
