Description
Griaß enk!
After a brief civil war from 1933-34 in Germany democracy holds high in the German Reich and under the protection of the newly re-established Monarchy. Engelbert Dollfuß as the defacto dictator of the Austrofascist State begins to loose his grip on power due to internal and external pressure. Democracy resurfaces in 1935 after Dollfuß strikes a deal with the opposition lead by (Robert Karl Ludwig Maximilian Michael Maria Anton Franz Ferdinand Joseph Otto Hubert Georg Pius Johannes Marcus d'Aviano of Habsburg-Lorraine) know by Robert of Habsburg-Lorraine, Archduke of Austria-Este. He was the second oldest son of the late and last Emperor of the Habsburg monarchy Karl I. and took the role as monarch in Austria while his older brother Otto will be crowned as King of Hungary at a later point. After a referendum and after the Olympics in 1936 the country joins Germany with international recognition.
The name of the new Austrian state and its flag are compromises and combinations in several ways. To compensate the Habsburgs for the lose of their title of Emperor the unique title of Archking was established to situate the Habsburgs over the other German Kings while still being lower in rank to the emperor. The inspiration for the title was taken from the again specifically for the Habsburgs created title of Archduchy. The Austrian crownprince aswell bears the historic title of Archduke as he did in the old Habsburg Monarchy.
The flag constitutes of the Austrian tricolour of red-white-red and the Austrian double-headed eagle with a black-yellow/golden crest. The double-headed eagle was re-introduced (or rather kept from Dollfuß) to build a conection with Austrian history and pronouce the German character and Germanness of the Austrian people due to the Holy Roman Empire (of the German Nation) sharing the double-headed eagle and being the reason the Austrians adopted the eagle-symbolism in the first place. The black-yellow/golden crest has the same relationship to Austrian and all-German history because the official colours of the HRE were a *black* eagle with red beak and claws on a *golden* backing. After the end of the HRE the Austrian Empire took these symbols as their own.
Lastly the offical name of state of German-Austria (only used in the most official circumstances like foreign affairs) pays homage to and honours the democratic traditions of the Republic of German-Austria which was created shortly after the end of the Great War and tried to join the newly-established German Republic. It also served as an assurance that the newly Habsburg-lead Austrian state didn't intend on reconquering the former Habsburg territories for the Empire.
Farewell and auf Wiedersehen!
