Description (Sorry to keep spamming y'all with my wing WIPs, but just in case my ideas might help someone else, I'm posting them here.)

Here's my (overly-simplified) mock-up of the fursuit wing armature, just to illustrate the proper curvature of the wings as well as that of the wing base, because I couldn't depict either in the cardboard mock-up . (Quickly constructed from wire, foam padding, screws/bolts and duct tape.)

Hey! Do you mind if I use your design to make a pair of wings for a cosplay? I think it's do-able. If you'd like, I can post WIP's and credit the design to you.

Sure thing! Have you seen the other wing designs I've done? Might want to look/read over those too. [link]

Thanks! I did see the other wings, which look awesome by the way! :3
Also, I was wondering if I could bounce an idea for the flight feathers off of you. What do you think of using a VERY thin metal rod as the core and making the barb out of two layers of fabric (probably silk) coated in glue to stiffen? Or do you think there might be a better way to make them? (trying to make them as realistic as possible )

Yes, you can use a thin, sturdy-but-flexible metal or fiberglass rod (kite rods, for example) or Delrin (acetal) plastic rods, or even thick plastic straws (like drinking straws). ~Bushitaka uses plastic straws, which work work well for his super-realistic wings, and don't hardly add any extra weight to them, which is preferred: [link] (~Mashayahana 's wings are based oh his designs, so you can see some in-progress shots in her gallery: [link] ) Also be sure to check out =Sunnybrook1 's realistic wings tutorials: [link]

oh wow! this is great, it acutally inspired me to try to make a refrence of my own, based losely off this design but mine would be constructed of thick poster board (not sure if that would work or not)

here it is [link] if you want to see it ^^

Actually, they'll be string-pulleyed (is that a word?).

NoxiNobodi In reply to swandog [2011-08-01 13:56:40 +0000 UTC]

yes these!they are wonderful! Are you planning on putting some fakefur/fluff fabric on mechanism to hide it?

swandog In reply to NoxiNobodi [2011-08-01 14:03:52 +0000 UTC]

Yes, my moth wings are covered in velvet and the backpack harness is covered in fur as well. Will post a WIP pic of them soon. I've asked the fellow who did the animatronics for Artsquish if he would be interested in doing a motor rig for mine as well, although they all come together to rotate around one central joint instead of having four separate joints like hers does: [link]

Ok so I made the wing structures out of wire, newspaper and spray foam like I was thinking before, and they're being impossible when I'm trying to get them to harness to one's back. As light as they are, they're just too heavy and unweildy (sp?) so.... I think I'm going to make several more prototypes, including one with stepped foamcore. Ill let you know if anything works! ^^ Thanks again for putting your ideas out here so readily. If I have success and great success, I credit you for the assistance, and if you no longer want to make your own can make you a pair. IF I ever figure out a method XD

*nods* I really love how Starbright made her harness, and I want to order at least the harness from her (and maybe the wings as well, if I decide not to have mine articulated after all): [link]

I haven't started on my swandog wings yet, and may just commission someone else to make them, as I just don't really have the time, energy nor space to tackle it myself (am already trying to make a huge pair of articulated luna moth wings for my lunacorn fursuit).

lotusii In reply to swandog [2008-06-12 04:18:26 +0000 UTC]

I completely understand. Seriously, if I get the process down I will send you the approx. of how much they cost to make and if you want I'll make you a pair. You do so much already. I want to make them articulated, and I think Ican make it work with stepped foamcore, a couple of hinges, aquarum tubing and some string, but again, I have to try it out first. Need time for that XD

swandog In reply to lotusii [2008-08-14 17:18:51 +0000 UTC]

Thanks; I look forward to hearing your ideas! Maybe we can discuss this further via notes or e-mail? I really hope I can somehow make them articulated, but I'm going to start with my articulated moth wings first, just to see if I can manage those before I tackle the swan wings, since they have more moving parts. Anyways, I came across a neat idea for making realistic "feathers" that might interest you: [link]

Pretty cool idea. I think it could be really fun and awesome looking, can't wait to see how you pull it off.
WIP of costumes amaze me, I really think it's interesting to see how people work.

Hey, random thought, looking at your picture here. You could do the drawing you made easily with lightweight tubes(for the string mechanism) surrounded with newsprint, framed with aluminum armature wire. That would be significantly light enough to put on the back without stressing the shoulders.

lotusii In reply to lotusii [2008-03-29 03:49:21 +0000 UTC]

Also, my plan after that would be to use spray foam (that stuff they use for pipe insulation) on the outside, carve off the excess, spray paint it the color you want, then add or carve feathers. What do you think? Lightweight, cheap materials (minus the feathers XD), quick to complete...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

swandog In reply to lotusii [2008-08-14 17:24:30 +0000 UTC]

The only problem with some of those materials is that you can't wash them if the wings get dirty, and they don't have a long lifetime. Foam, fur, metal wires/rods and plastic pipes/rods/mesh are best for keeping clean (wood too, but not if you have to thoroughly wet it, unless you use teak or cedar dowels). I don't really want to make these "quick", because I want them to be high-quality and last for many years.

Keep up the good work on these wings! I know you'll get it, and make fantastic wings!
