Description Time for plant people? Time for plant people!

Deacon and Fiore are naiads— a type of water sprit, closely related to dryads.

The spirits are associated with water lilies, so I attached those to the origin of the creature in SoS— there’s a certain type of water lily whose roots, every now and then, form into a person-shape, mandrake style, and come to life. These two are siblings/cousins because they came from the same “mother” patch.

In mythology, they are spirits usually considered to be female, a type of nymph. In Songs of Serenvale, also a single gender species, but it is one specific to them, neither male nor female, much as humans may try to qualify it.

…Usually. Deacon, the guy on the shore, was always sort of namelessly uncomfortable with that identification, without really being able to place why. He was also fascinated with the Corps of Hunters, who keep settlements safe from giant crazy monsters and such. Looking for excitement, he eventually joined them, in disguise at first, to keep Fiore, who doesn’t much care for human OR hunters, from finding out.

In his disguise as a human, it was assumed that he was a man, and something about that felt right. Soon he threw himself into the work, gaining skill and reputation so he could keep coming back. Eventually he couldn’t bring himself to go home and guard the wetland and be what he was supposed to be. He had a calling and an identity on land that he never wanted to be without again.

Thus, he gave up being an ethereal forest creature in favor of being a person. Regrettably, he’s kind of garbage at the being a person part, but, it is what it is.

Fiore….kinda doesn’t get it. They’re a little set in their ways, having been totally content to guard this pond and this corner of the forest for hundreds of years. They’re not evil, but I think they’re a little hurt that Deacon left, and don't like the company he keeps these days, and Deacon is a little hurt that Fiore doesn’t understand why. Things are tense between these two.

This was kind of an experiment for me to see if I could kinda give the gist of a background without outlining. Results...maybe I should put more emphasis on the lilies? Maybe just a few in the front? Hm.

It was good practice though, so thanks for the prompt, it inspired a piece I really like that I might not have thought to do otherwise ^___^

The story is indeed interesting, as well as the scene. Planting people reminds me of a scene in the movie "Major Payne".

This is nice! I like the story behind it and the sort of green sepia colouring.

These two... well, they're avoiding their problems instead of dealing, but I don't think the relationship is unrecoverable. Idk how/if I'm going to find a way to push them together to sort out their nonsense in the story they're part of, but they still could.

Glad I found the group ^__^

Same! I don't know what direction it'll go yet but I really enjoy these two and their dynamic and it would be great to be able to resolve their shared arc in something other than more sadness >__<

Yep! These two won't show up for a while yet, but they're a side plot in a comic I'm trying to start posting in March-ish-- I want to wait until I have enough pages to open on a completed scene.
