Awareness Rising: Due to the constant development along our coastlines, areas such as Waites Island and its almost-pristine environment are becoming rare, and little gems like this need to be protected. Waites Island is a barrier island, and is protected and privately owned by Coastal Carolina University. But there are so many other areas that are not protected and are subject to development and sightseers. Barrier islands are one of the best defenses our coasts have against storms, erosion, etc, and often harbor a variety of wildlife, of which many populations are dwindling. Building on these fragile ecosystems also poses a risk to the people living there because barrier islands are always shifting and moving. So your beach may be undergoing accretion (building out) one year, but you may find your house falling into the ocean the next year (just look at Isle of Palms, SC).
