Wow Susie! This is really good... I love the cross-hatching technique... Yesterday was my first time trying to draw facial hair (I watched Mark Crilley's video on YouTube), but I really like you're technique here. One question, do you shade first and then draw in the details over the shading? I noticed Mark doing this on the hair... I'm thinking to try this in my next drawing.
Anyhow, great piece ... the hairline is spot on as are the eyes, ear, shirt, just everything!

is only the first layer. Then I go on with details, then shade again, details, shades ...
I don't have an absolutely fixed method. I draw layer by layer until I think it's finished
