Description Ah, cats. Gotta love 'em.

I recently got into a random Japanese folklore binge -- and discovered that their cat-related myths are most intriguing. A good chunk of them, if not all, involve the cat turning into a monster and eating people, but they aren't always portrayed as bad things. (Anyone ever seen those little cat statues with their paws extended? Case in point.)

One such story involves a childless elderly couple. They take in a stray cat out of the kindness of their hearts, despite the fact that they ain't doin' so good financially. They treat the kitty like their own daughter. One day the cat goes missing and a woman appears on their doorstep; not only does she claim to be the cat, but she also promises to repay their kindness to her.

The woman takes on the guise of a geisha -- and a darn good one at that. People travel for miles just to see her perform. Everyone from the peasantry to the nobility praises her as the best dancer/entertainer they've ever seen. And that old couple? Yeah, they're not broke anymore.

Anyway, it ends with someone finding out she's a cat and telling everyone and then the cat goes AAAARARAWR YOU JERKFACE and eats him, the end. Kind of a downer, but hey, it started out good!

So... yeah.

They're all so pretty and sparkly and confusing. And they all MEAN things! Really, does there have to be symbolism in the style of knot someone wears? XD XD

Ah, Japan. Gotta love it.

Japanese stories are all like that, or at least vast majoroty of them - They are not only about "be generous / courageous and be rewarded for it" as our stories got and whose moral points get arguable. This story is rather very nice, in fact - It shows good people and a grateful cat, who is undeniably a monster.

Amen to all of the above. Yeah, Far Eastern stories tend to be a breath of fresh air -- they just don't follow the classic Western concepts, y'know? It's awesome. And this story is definitely one of my favorites.

But to be fair western fairy tales had their moral points before they got changed. Red Riding Hood totally deseved being devoured by a wolf by taking an advise from a stranger...

Oh yeah, they were all meant to teach a lesson. Important lessons, at that. Only I've found that a lot of Eastern myths tend to be episodic at best; most of the ones I've been told weren't so much about a "moral of the story" as they were about just telling a story. I've always thought that was a pretty fun, practical approach to it. It's certainly a deviation from the framework we're used to.

I'm not trying to denounce Western culture at all -- I'm a sucker for Aesop's fables, personally -- but variety is always fun.

Way to capture the fluidity and grace of both a cat and a Geisha here.

The onlookers look totally evil, though.
