Look how is fin is bent sideways! That's so sad! He's been in captivity for a long time. That's why I hate going to places like that, because of what they do to them.

Their dorsal fins are made up of cartilage (the same stuff your nose and the tips of your ears are made of) and while its not exactly known what makes their dorsal fins droop in captivity, it's theorized that its caused by hanging out near the surface more then their wild counterparts. In the wild, orcas spend most of their time hunting and diving to hunt or feed, where the water pressure is higher and keeps their dorsal rigid. In captivity, the need to hunt and dive is eliminated and they spend more time near the surface of the water where the cartilage isn't supported by the pressure and grows weaker. When they go under, and dive you can see their dorsals straighten- maybe not as tall as they would be in the wild, but they don't stay flopped over. On the flip side, some wild orcas have been seen with droppy fins at the surface, not that degree, but they don't stand perfectly straight. More to the point, the fin droop isn't an indicator of mood or health, and it doesn't cause him any pain

OK, i know this is a old post but the truth is All captive adult male Orcas have collapsed dorsal fins, likely because they have no space in which to swim freely and are fed an unnatural diet of thawed dead fish. SeaWorld claims that this condition is common-however, in the wild, it rarely ever happens and is a sign of an injured or unhealthy orca.
