Description
"The sea, the sea, the sea. It rolled and rolled and called to me. Come in, it said, come in."
-The Wanderer by Sharon Creech
-----------------------
My entry to 's Nature Horses Contest [link]
-----------------------
I must say, I absolultely love this. It is much inspired by the Owl City CD Ocean Eyes and Sharon Creech's The Wanderer (one of my favorite childhood books) and lastly, by the ocean and arabians themselves. I love the ocean- so it's quite appropriate that I live in "The Ocean State", isn't it? Arabians are just so gorgeous and expressive, by far my favorite horse breed.

This is one of my characters by the way, in the same storyline as Arealorn. Her name, as one may assumes from the title, is Oceanic.
-------------------------
Process:
Clone out halter
Crop horse
Smudge/paint mane and tail
Add seaweed to mane and tail
Paint the horse's eye
Paint the scales onto horse
Paint gills onto horse
Resize background and alter color slightly
Add horse to background, resize and recolor slightly
Add splashes
Add starfishes
Dodge/burn horse a bit
Add text and signature
--------------------------
Critique
Overall impact/emotions from it?
How well does it fit the contest theme of horses interacting with nature?
Do the colors all work together?
Do the mane and tail look realistic?
Does the stock work well together?
Does the horse look the right size?
How well does it fit the quote?
Any other comments?

my advice would be that maybe you try messing around with the lighting a bit to make it look more like the horse is blended in with the background, a photo filter might also help with this, otherwise lovely work

wow, you did a great job on this!! the only comment is to smooth out the cut-job on the horse's left side (the side where his head is not). and outline would also be really good(:

keep up the great work!

the only things that i can think of as a critique, is that the gills shouldn't be the same colour as the horse's coat; the underside of the gill would be very pink due to the large amount of blood flow, and a complete lack of hair, so it would a colour closer to that of the gums of the horse. it doesn't need to be a huge pink line, but maybe have a thin line of pink in there, to make them look more gill-like. when i first looked at the picture, i though they were scars also, maybe you could have made the legs look a bit damp, by darkening them slightly? i can't really give pointers on how to do that though, as it is something i still struggle with

other than that, it is a brilliant, unusual and striking piece of artwork

Thanks so much for the critique! Once I get a chance to edit I can definitley fool around with darkening the legs- and I can try redoing the gills too

Thanks so much!

your welcome i always like it when people critique my work, so i try to return the favour to other people when i can
gills can be funny things, but if you look at the structure of them it makes them easier to draw
