You are most certainly doing this community a great service. Such wonderful and VERY helpful tutorials. This one is unique. Even after taking a Digital imagery course what I thought i knew about photoshop ceases to amazing me as there's always something new you can do with the tools you use. I'm just becoming a fan of layers.
Almost a 'duh' moment but I always got mad at how I'd want certain aspects of the photo to change while the rest remained as is. Perfect presentation of this. Thank you.

Thanks so much for this...have given it a try & linked it to my attempt. Not my attempt is very good. Can't work out how to get the correct exposure on the rocks in the creek.

Its reasonably easy when you're shown how!!!!

I think is probable that you have blown out the rocks when taking the shot.. all that dark bush will swing the exposure the wrong way.. do you know how to bracket.. set it in the menu -1 0 and +1 and set the camera to multi shot and take three shots and the camera will vary the tree exposure.. having said that a tripod and taking two shots.... one as you have then switch the camera to manual and take the second shot at -2 in your view finder. It will be dark but the rocks will be exposed better.

which photoshop have you got? Cs3 will convert RAW files to Tiffs whcih you must do. You should also have a program software with your camera.. nikon software which will convert your RAW files into tiffs... thats necessary first.. sorry I assumed knowledge of this!

I've tried this on my latest, attempting to make it look better without the hazards of HDR. One day, Sun-Seeker, one day...

Once you have done a couple it will be as fast as anything.... just watch if you have trees etc popping up across the horizon because you can end up showing halos around them.. clean horizons work best.... also you can lower the opacity in various areas of the shot to show thru less of the lighter layer if you want to make a vignette for eg.

One of things I love about Photoshop CS3 is the ability to open any photo in RAW. It opens a whole new way of working with images. Thanks for the wonderfully clear tutorial.

Unfortunately it is gathering dust next to the computer. I like it, but I just don't seem to have the drive to do any art right now.--too many other things on my plate (like work).

I like this tequnique, and the way you explained it was pretty good too. However what you did to the image in my opinion makes it look fake. I think you could put this technique to more effective use if the changes were more subtle. But thats just my 2 cents. Nice work.

i use rpg 95% of the time, usually the exposure is as i want it, and it just needs contrast and color adjustments. I wish raw softwares had layer masks!
