The speckled gray she-cat trekked through the dark, murky grass. Green leaf was approaching soon, but small flowers still stuck to nearby bushes and pine cones clung to the tall, towering pine trees overheard. Brindlestorm walked around impatiently, looking for her dear brother. Her emerald eyes looked around and saw a pair of piercing blue eyes staring back at her.
She flinched suddenly. “Skypatch! You scared me!” Skypatch giggled and merely shrugged.
“It’s your own fault for being so skittish.” The sister smiled at her brother as they both sat down on the forest floor. Stars twinkled above like a cat blinking their eyes. The former queen looked at the white and gray tom.
“Sandykit’s apprenticeship will begin tomorrow,” the dame casually commented. Skypatch’s expression suddenly changed to a remorseful glance.
“Brindlestorm, what if I haven’t taught her enough?” His paws began to shake like her did when he was nervous. “I mean, I’ve tried to teach her everything there is, but what if I wasn’t a good enough father?” Brindles York gave him an expression of pure shock and confusion.
Her voice started out as soft and dry. “Honestly, I thought you’d end up like Soot-talon. You say how he acted when his mate died while giving birth to his kits. Everyone knew he loved Thriftheart, but no one expected him to hate his children. I thought you’d end up like him with Sandykit, but you didn’t. You’ve done better than any tom could’ve. I assure you she will be a fine warrior.”

Artist’s Note: As Sandyfern’s caretaker and mother figure, Brindlestorm worried how her brother would treat his own daughter. To her surprise, Skypatch took care of her better than she did and loved her dearly.
