My parents had another TS named Pistache (Pistachio in French) who used to answer the phone (I think she didn't like the ring and would knock the receiver off the cradle) and turn on the lights! Once, the bulb burned out while we were away for the weekend and when we came back she had shredded the wallpaper under the light switch, we had to redo the whole wall (she had all her claws and must have tried for hours, batting the light switch).

Wow!!! That is very smart. Increditable actually. Years and years ago, I had a cat (not a Tortie) that quickly learned that when she was outside and on a ledge along my house, if she leaned on the doorbell someone would open the door. Thus, she began to ring the doorbell when she wanted in! That was an orange tabby. It was too funny.
But Boo, she can open doors and cabinets very well. She uses her paws much more for what she wants than the other cats. Of course, I don't mean she turns the doorknob, but if just slightly cracked she will work at it until she opens it.

Oh my he is so handsome too! What a beautiful photo. I had to fav it. Yes, I agree 100 percent. They are much, much more intelligent than many people realize. I believe Mark Twain also stated something about anyone being a friend to a cat is a friend of his. (Something along those lines). I once saw a cat play dead as two dogs hovered near it.

My favorite Twain quote about cats is: "Of all God's creatures there is only one that cannot be made the slave of the leash. That one is the cat. If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat." - Mark Twain
Newton sighs. For the first few years, I thought he was just exhaling and I was anthropomorphising, but since the birth of my son he has found more things to sigh about, and others have noticed it too. When he wasn't allowed into the baby's room, he would sit in the hallway, look up at us, and sigh loudly. Lately, it's mostly when my son won't let him investigate a new toy. Toys seem to fascinate him, and he is an active participant in wooden train sessions [link] .

That's a good Mark Twain quote too. I do like the "When a man loves cats, I am his friend and comrade without further introduction." Or, "when a man holds a cat by his tail, he learns something he can learn in no other way."
Sounds like your Newton is jealous of the baby. I will tell you, when my daughter was born ears ago, I had a wonderful tuxedo cat that I got from a shelter in New York. I loved that cat, but I was spending so much time with the new baby, of course, that I didn't realize my attention had lessened toward my cat. One day, I pulled in the driveway and she was sitting on the front porch as always when I arrived, but oddly she did not want to come in. She always did before. She turned and ran toward the field. I never saw her again. I realize now she was saying goodbye. I felt horrible and still do to this day.

I'd never heard that first one, thank you! I've added it to my collection
He is, or at least he was. In the first week we brought the baby home, he ate a plant (a ficus I think) which we had had for almost six years, one which we didn't know was poisonous to cats until my mother (a retired flourist) told us. I took him to the vet (thankfully we had family to help with the baby) and they ran a battery of tests on him, said they thought he had leukemia and wanted to do a biopsy, which they admitted would only serve to confirm he was dying and wouldn't save him. That was when I told them to stop! With all the distractions, by then we had run up a two thousand dollar vet bill, so I went to get him and he literally leapt into my arms, happy to see me and seemingly healthy. My mom discovered the teeth marks on the plant, and we figured out what had happened, he had simply detoxed at the animal hospital. That was over four years ago, and we've since given away the plant and changed vets. He is also a lot friendlier towards my son, although they still have rivalries, particularly over new toys.
I'm very sorry to hear about your cat, but think of it this way; perhaps she had decided that her work was done, you now had someone to fill in for her, and she went on to find someone else who needed her more?
On another note, I was wondering if you'd ever read this short: [link]

Wow, that is a beautiful story. I had to fav it and I understood every word. It is extremely well written and could only have been written by someone who felt that love and experienced that love of a feline companion. It's soul to soul communication. Thank you for sharing that with me.
Thank goodness your mother made that plant discovery. You know, I looked and looked for my cat at that time, with no luck. A friend told me they were sure they had seen her about 2 miles away at a woman's house who had numerous cats. I always hoped she was there. I checked there too. But, perhaps you are right.

Indian Rubber Plant. Looks so harmless and average too. Thanks for sharing, as I have a lot of plants. Oddly, it is flowers that I have to watch. If I have flowers inside, they want to nibble them. Excellent anonymous quote and so true. That's just it, so many people view cats as selfish and that is so untrue. Cats are just very careful as to whom they love and trust. That is why I feel honored when a cat shows me affection or talks to me in that meowing way.

Yes, we had no idea until it happened, and Newton likes to smell the flowers, but rarely bites them.
Well said!
