Holy shit. The first original style I've seen in quite a while.

I belive it would be a nice solution, to scan with a large resolution, then you adjust the levels a little, maybe make a light layer with a traced lines for more smoothness, then stretch your image smaller.
Its always better to work with greater resoΒ΄s beacuse it is more exact, you can have a little noise there, but when you stretch it smaller you dont see it anymore!
