The coffee thing is to show how little she needs to get the comic self-supporting. If 200 out of her 70-odd thousand watchers gave her $5/month (the cost of one coffee a month), then she'd be able to afford her rent, office space, food and bills.
It's a small amount to most people (even people just getting an allowance from their parents could probably spare $1.25 week), but it adds up to enough to keep her alive (which I think you'll agree is a good thing)
