Yeah, in the games you can drop two pokemon off at a daycare center to make them level up while you go on the rest of your pokemon journey. More often than not, if both pokemon are the opposite sex and get along with each other, you might return to the daycare and be told that they found a pokemon egg. If both pokemon are different species, then the egg will always be the same species as the female (except for the pokemon, Ditto, who is a total whore in the games because you can breed any species with it and the egg will always be the species as the other pokemon).

It really doesn't matter which of the RPG games you play when going into Pokemon for the first time. My first pokemon game was the early Pokemon Gold, and when I turned 8 I was given Pokemon Emerald to play, from the third generation, and was startled by the improved graphics since my first game. From there on out, I've played many of the RPG games, and most recently the early Red and Blue games.
Since the HeartGold/SoulSilver games (both remakes of Gold and Silver), I've been a little bitter towards the latest Pokemon RPG games. As of yesterday, though, I've made the decision to be more open minded to the new games by saving up for the latest Pokemon X/Y games. What I couldn't stand upon seeing the trailers before the games came out was the fact that it's a 3D world and not a 2D world. I love 2D games, and very few 3D games, so that was a major turn off for me, but now I want to see what the game itself has to offer.

I haven't even played any of the 2d ones, but a 3d Pokémon game sounds gross :/

Yeah, but I hear it has a really interesting story with the characters, which is something the earlier games didn't really have. In the first generation, it was really standard: train pokemon, fight battles, get the badges, finish the pokedex, become the champion. I think it was the 5th generation, Pokemon Black and White, when they started intoducing characters with interesting backstories and thought-provoking motives, particularly the character, N. (Warning! He's pretty attractive for a 2D character!)
I also really liked the stuff the sequel games (White 2/Black 2) provided after becoming the pokemon champion. Usually all that's left to do in the game is to finish the pokedex and then there's not much else to do (I mostly refer to the first generation with this), but I was pleasantly surprised in the sequel games. They had an additional character that only appears if you become champion, and their sex is determined on what sex your character is. The way you get to know them makes them feel fleshed out, and it almost feels like your talking to a real person. There's also a thing that gets unlocked where your RPG character can become an actor for a type of Hollywood movie-making part of the game, and the movies you star can either be box office hits or flops depending on how you chose the dialogue. It's much cooler to do than to explain, though.
