Once upon a time, there was a single soul. It was a perfect balance of harmony. But just before the soul took mortal form, a strange force cleaved it in two.
Half of the soul was born first; she was given the name Kastenia Butterfly. With only half a soul, the baby never cried, never laughed, never reacted to any stimuli. Unsure if the baby would live, Celena Butterfly produced another heir, and the other half of the soul was born.
Reunited with her other half, the first baby recovered, and all seemed well.
However, a cleaved soul is largely unstable, and cracks formed in the multiverse.
As a means of fixing it, the first born of the magical realm called the first born soul - Kastenia - to the magical realm to prepare her soul for reforming with her sister's. After many years in the magical realm, her body became more magic than mewman, and despite her mother's many attempts to return her to Mewni, she would begin to dissolve as soon as she left the realm. And so, Kastenia stayed, and waited, for her younger sister to arrive.
Without her other half, Rosaline became very depressed. She often ran away from the castle, or huddled in her room. Then, the got the wand. A very faint connection to her sister through magic, Rosaline was alleviated from some of her anguish.
But there was still an instability in the universe.
Just as the timeline was beginning to break down, Rosaline was finally called to the realm.
Her and her sister finally together again, their souls were able to fuse back together, and their lives as well as the timeline was returned to how it was.
And all was well.
