Description These cosplays were debuted at Megacon 2012 in Orlando, Fl. While John had originally planned on his Alice being maiko inspired, the heat quickly changed that plan into wearing it as a courtesan, or oiran. Stormy's original plan worked out well as she had planned on wearing her's as a tayu, or a more highly skilled courtesan.

The setting for this Alice in... cosplay set is Japan. We thought it would be fun to do a Japanesed themed set so that we could gain skills on how to make kimono and obi. Along the way John did over twenty hours of research on geisha, maiko, courtesans and kimono in order to make his as accurate as possible, with a few stylistic exceptions.

Overall we were thrilled with the way these turned out. We also both realized how difficult and hot it is to wear these ensembles. John plans on making a more accurate wig for his while also planning on wearing it correctly when the weather cools.

Stormy's kimono consisted of a satin-lined rose brocade outermost one, a white rose cotton with cotton lining underneath that, with two more additional cotton with cotton lining kimono below the first two. She sewed all of this, including the corseted obi.

John's kimono consisted of a butterfly brocade exterior one, a false blue to gold iridescent kimono under that, along with the blue cotton kimono. He made all of his including his obi and kanzashi.

Both wigs were styled by John with Stormy's hair ornaments and decorations also being made by him.

Thanks so much!! John worked really hard on all of them. Believe it or not, most of Stormy's ornaments were made from craft foam, with the exception of a few fabric roses. We will try to have a back view of the her wig posted up soon, it has a circular bun and some more fabric decorations that you can't see from the front. ^^

Thank you so much!! These things were really time consuming to make lol, luckily though John can bust out a basic kimono that is fairly accurate in around three hours now!

Tayuu and Oiran are basically the same rank in two different districts, if I remember correctly.

I love all the kanzashi! You guys did great

Ah, gotcha, I (John) wasn't aware of that. It's amazing how much published information there is that contradicts one another or is completely false. It's especially true when it comes to the courtesans. I'll have to do some more research to learn their ranks.

Thanks so much for the compliment on our kanzashi, while they are far from authentic, I was heavily inspired by authentic ones and I played them up to work with our theme. Overall we were both pleased with how they turned out.

I make kanzashi for a living ( ), so I was pretty impressed by your work.

If ever you need information for oiran, tayuu, geiko, or maiko - by all means, join the immortalgeisha.com forums! There's a wonderful knowledge bank there.

Oh wow! Your gallery is so impressive! I'm so thrilled that you like what I did. You have so many beautiful kanzashi, I really envy your talent!!

An interesting note about the kanzashi I made for my Alice was that they were made from the wrong side of the brocade scraps. Due to the beautiful coloring of the butterflies, the reverse side of the fabric is quite impressive so I thought it would lend well, and also match well, to do that.

I'm a long time lurker at immortalgeisha.com. It's actually where I found most of my kanzashi information. I'm currently reading Geisha by Liza Dalby primarily due to the good reviews it got there. I'll have to create an account haha, the whole "Water Business" culture is so interesting as well as kimono and other traditional forms of Japanese dress!
