Description This is my version of the nightgown worn by Elizabeth Swann in the first Pirates movie. I found this site rather helpful in drafting the pattern and as far as reference images go. Some of the changes to the costume were deliberate--such as the train and the ruffles at the hem. Others were due to the fact that some things weren't clearly visible in the reference images. And obviously I don't have Keira Knightley's figure so the fit is a bit different
Now technically this is a costume, but as I intended it for regular everyday, or much rather every night, wear I put it in the "clothing" category.
I've secretly been wanting to make this nightgown for the longest time, but I just couldn't find the right fabric! Then last week I finally found this lovely woven-striped emboidered cotton voile which was (though not an exact match) absolutely perfect! Except for the fact that there were silver metallic threads in every stripe...so after sewing it all together I spent several days removing all those threads with tweezers and am very pleased to say that without them it looks much better I also felt that the hem looked rather plain without ruffles, but after hemming and gathering 10 Meters of them, I have come to the conclusion that ruffles are most definitely overrated.
It is gathered at the front under the bust and closes in the back with ten mother of pearl buttons. I'll probably post some detail shots in a couple of days.
I figured that since this was a costume in PotC it should be photographed by the sea, and though it's obviously not the caribbean, I think the Baltic Sea is rather nice too
Oh yes and thank you very much to for taking these wonderful pictures

I want to comment more about the gown but it is late and I have a ton going on this week and have to plan for an out of town day trip to visit my dad for the day who is in ICU on a vent with a slim chance he will ever get off of it. my ex. bf has offered to take me there for the day since he's the one who sold me the piece of junk he promised to fix and never did so it is too dangerous for me to take it alone . I was rather stunned he offered. I had already arranged to borrow his truck if things got worse but was told he was getting better then over night he went from someone who wished himself Happy Birthday on the 4th. to someone on a vent who can't talk or even be awake. At least if I go there in person before they unplug the vent I can whisper in his ear that I'm there and Fred (that's me) loves him.!so I will comment on your things and your talent , your beauty and your exquisite HAIR !! Nothing wrong with us slightly puffy girls, that is what is perfect for that ERA's clothing ! You gotta have it for some of those corsets and cleavage !!
I'm gonna go look at the rest of your and some other people's stuff. I started looking at someone's leather bound vintage books and man oh man were they stunning! (A lot like your stuff. I started out comenting because I have a severe love of all things pajamas especially vintage gowns and robes. ) I hope to make for myself one day. I bought the pattern. I think your patterns for both gowns are incredible and truly one of a kind. Please don't think me to be a weirdo, I just have a love for all vintage patterns especiallyΒ  30-40's and late 80's all 70's ! It's 6 AM now and I am getting tired so I'm gonna go look til I fall asleep'l

Could you tell me how much fabric you've used? I've got some fabric at home I might want to use on this nightgown.

cool.
It's cool. ...You know... if we don't all die of the so-called "swine flu". I'm so sick of politics and racism and everyone being mad at each other just under the surface. Everyone blames everyone else. No one looks for solutions *together*.
You know?
Other than that... nice. The weather is getting better and I'm staying busy. Even if it's with the mending. :-D
I'm looking for a good photographer (nearby... not in UK) for my own work... since I'm really not very inspired with a camera. How did you find yours? School?
Where did you live in the states? Like it much?

This is gorgeous! You did an excellent job. It's so fluid and feminine looking! Is it comfy to sleep in? I didn't even know they still made voile fabric since they mention it in a 1920's magazine. Thanks for the inadvertent help!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

StellarReverie In reply to devilkitten1 [2008-09-07 11:56:05 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much : ) Yes it's quite comfortable to sleep in as far as I know voile is just a very light weight, sometimes semi-transparent woven cotton fabric so I suppose they still make it I could be wrong about the term though...

StellarReverie In reply to amazonsummons [2008-09-07 12:46:11 +0000 UTC]

Aww thank you It literally took years to find this fabric--it's actually not a harsh weave at all, but a very fine, semi-transparent cotton voile that has woven in stripes and is embroidered all over with flowers. I *really* need to get some detail shots of it but I've been sooo lazy

Lovely - you need a ruffle foot for your sewing machine After doing a Victorian bustle petticoat with seven rows of ruffles down the back I bought one, ?I haven't quite fugured how to make it do more or less gathers but if the exact proportions aren't important it's fantastic.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

StellarReverie In reply to Janes-Wardrobe [2008-06-11 11:18:24 +0000 UTC]

Ooo ruffle foot! How does that work? I have a a pretty cheap sewing machine...don't know if it could handle that heh...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Janes-Wardrobe In reply to StellarReverie [2008-06-13 07:19:22 +0000 UTC]

It's a mechanical attachement that fits your machine like an ordinary foot with a bit that goes over the screw that holds your needle in place - difficult to describe - but as the needle goes up and down part of the foot feeds extra fabric under the foot as you sew making it gather. They are adjustable and gather different fabrics differently. I found mine on ebay and it wasn't terribly expensive. It's great if you're making your own patterns and you don't have an exact length of fabric to gather. I do find it can be a bit variable though. It saves a ton of time if you've got a lot of gathering to do though.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

StellarReverie In reply to Janes-Wardrobe [2008-06-13 07:26:13 +0000 UTC]

Ah...so does it gather and sew the seam at the same time then? I usually just crank up the upper thread tension, sew over the part I want to gather twice and then pin and sew the actual seam.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Janes-Wardrobe In reply to StellarReverie [2008-06-13 07:41:14 +0000 UTC]

It can but I find it tricky to keep the seam straight so I prefer to sew the gathers then add the gathered piece to the straight piece. I works better than adjusting the tension

StellarReverie In reply to Janes-Wardrobe [2008-06-13 07:57:56 +0000 UTC]

Alright I'll definitely have to look into that then--thanks for the advice
