Okay. Back to watercolors again. Yay! SO much cleaner and quicker than colored pencil (sorry pencil fans!).I don't know why she's so somber. But I'm pretty happy with the wing design and some of the fur. I hope the background renders as deep space.
11"x14" watercolor and ink.

In the space background she (most likely) used table salt and/or big-grainedΒ sea salt.
Sorry if it doesn't answer your question, but from my personal experience, it looks a lot like salt.

Why can I never make my pictures look like this? When I'm using salt it never leaves any marks

I use a salt grinder too, and I do it when it's wet. But it never leaves any marks, it either just melts away, or dries like lumps

all one piece. i did the background first, got the entire "outer-space" background part wet, swirled in color and let them bleed into each other. then i sprinkled on various sizes of sea salt and let it dry completely. then i finished up the rest
