Description Another project form digital illustration class. We've been mimicking different real media techniques, and for our last one, we got to pick our own. I picked embroidery. So...yeah, here it is.

100% digital, with some scanned texture in the background.

Don't take it, redistribute, whatever. (C)'s on the image.

Am I to take that as an ok do it? I've been looking for a cool project that no one else has done. I'd give you full credit for original design and artwork. The stitching may be different though. I can't decide if I should embroider everything or use an applique for the horse.

Starhorse In reply to Kimchee [2015-05-08 18:11:06 +0000 UTC]

If I were to do it, I'd use a felt cutout for the horse and another for the saddle, so yeah, applique. And sure, go ahead, I don't mind. I sew myself, and I think it's plausible enough that it could be constructed for real. Show me when you're done

I still think it would be fun to make this in real fabric and thread. It would be a lot of work though >_<

Custom made brushes, in photoshop. Two main ones, made from a basic brush made from a line (have you ever created a brush preset?) then made to act like a zig zag stitch on a sewing machine. The exact settings were as follows:

starting with a brush preset of a vertical line about half an inch long (just drew a line with the hard round set to like...3 pixels wide or something like that)

Shape Dynamics: size jitter 8%, min diameter 20%
Scattering: scatter 15% both axes
Brush Tip Shape: spacing 15%

For the 'hand stitched' lines I just changed the settings:
Brush tip shape: spacing 270%, angle 90 percent (makes your vertical line a horizontal one)
Scattering: 30% one axis only
Shape dynamics: size jitter 70%, min diameter 40%

Then, to make it look like stitches, I used layer properties to give each 'thread color layer' a tiny tiny soft emboss to make it look like three dimensional thread instead of drawn on lines. tiny tiny drop shadow to one side makes it look like it's going into the 'fabric' which was a scanned texture from a nice wool felt scarf I own overlaid on the color 'fabric' I wanted.

That's pretty much where I started, then just fooled around from there. The stitches around the outside of some of the shapes were done in illustrator, but I could barely figure that out once, and seriously doubt I could duplicate it without digging up my notes again, which are probably in storage right now if I remember right. 90% of it though was those two brushes right there, though. do tell me if you get it to work, or have more questions!

lol I was going to ask how ya did it and that you had made skillz for doing it by hand. Would have thought it was the real thing if I didn't read the description. You really did an AMAZING job!! Sounds like a very fun and challenging class.

I agree with what many have already said--you NAILED the media mimicry in this one! Holy Cow! It's a beautiful design, and you crazy-well made it look like real embroidery. Beautiful work! Very, very cool too look at! It's like a trippy visual experience!

bardicsidhe [2011-03-26 21:22:22 +0000 UTC]

I just keep staring at this, and staring at this, and staring at this...

It looks real. You took all the fundamentals of embroidery, from the styles of stitches to the way the colors are outlined in other colors to make them pop, like the blue around the red body. I feel like I could reach out and touch the fabric on this one.

The saddle styling and the posture of the horse, along with the thick body and thinner legs has a sort of oriental appeal, but it's got your own personal twists that just makes it seem exotic, like it would be on the tent flaps and vests of elven horselords. Great work. I'll have to seriously think about buying a print of this.

Franson. But I made this technique up myself I explained it to a friend a few days ago though and it went all right, I could do the same for you if you'd like.

As someone who does a bunch of other fiber art stuff (knitting and spinning, most recently) I definitely agree. Granted, cross-stitching is the furthest extent of my embroidery ability thus far, but... I really want to try to replicate your picture. It would be so cool.
