Description
Yup, just watched this movie recently.
And I cannot suppress my opinions on the movie “MALEFICENT”.
Spoilers alert! Don’t read on if you haven’t watch the movie!!!
I love the old Disney Maleficent, with her love for slow torture and her amazing design. This is a villain we all loved without a clear back-story, so it was cool to finally see it. But the movie didn’t show her evil enough. I know main characters are supposed to have good endings, especially a Disney one, and I’m fine with it, but the way they turn her evil, then good again was not nearly as satisfying as I'd hoped.
First, I would like for Maleficent to not be named Maleficent when she was an innocent little fairy girl, maybe she was nameless, and while meeting Stefan, he gave her a name. I don't know, but I was expecting her to be named Maleficent after she turned evil.
The ring-throwing thing was sweet, but I would like to know more of Stefan’s relationship with her, maybe they share informations with each other, like Stefan telling her about the human world, maybe the tools humans used (spinning wheel) * wink * and in turn she revealed more and more of her secrets of magic, which grown up King Stefan will eventually use to keep her away.
While watching, we all know Stefan will surely betray Maleficent, but I was expecting a much more hurtful betrayal, a betrayal of trust. I expect Stefan to persuade her to give up something of hers so to make peace of the two worlds, so they could be together forever, but also not make himself look like a traitor. She would be so love struck that she sacrificed her wings willingly, only to wait day after day and not see Stefan coming back.
Then the crow part can come in, I have no objections on the crow story line.
And she found out after all she’s done for Stefan, he married a princess, and he seemed to actually love her! I feel this would give Maleficent a better reason to despise true love, instead of the reason him betraying just only for the throne.
I would also like to see Maleficent inflicting pain onto King Stefan a little bit at a time, half hoping for him to realize the pain he caused her, to learn his lesson. But all Stefan did was use all he knew about her to chase her away. Making Maleficent felt she was completely unwanted now.
The last straw will be Stefan having a daughter, and be so happy that he threw a grand celebration. Maleficent couldn’t comprehend why after Stefan cheated his way through life, he gets to be happy. AND NOW IS WHEN SHE COMPLETELY TURNS EVIL.
She cursed the baby, saying, “She shall prick her finger… AND DIE!” And when she heard about the true loves kiss thing, she laughed in the face of it because she’s completely sure it doesn’t exist.
I’m all cool with her showing compassion for the innocent Aurora (I mean, she was blessed with all these “everyone will love her” stuff, so she must be amazingly charming), but I wanted it to be more subtle. I wished Aurora never found out and thought it was all just a magical dream, because Maleficent brings Aurora to accompany herself, but puts her back to bed every night, because although she enjoys Aurora's company, she isn’t ready to let Stefan off the hook yet.
I also wish Prince Philip was more important to the plot. He can meet her even earlier, and Aurora will tell Maleficent about him. She finally sees her young self in Aurora, and wished to bare Aurora from the same fate she faced, so she secretly captured Prince Philip.
Then Aurora gets back to the castle, pricks her finger. Maleficent finally went to see how her sweet revenge is coming along, only to find a devastated King, driven mad not only by fear, but much more on guilt, calling her by the name he gave her. To finally get what she wanted, and felt herself feeling surprisingly empty.
So she decided to give Prince Philip a test, to prove to herself that she was right all along, true love never existed. But Prince Philip faced her head on, even when she TURNED INTO A DRAGON, and all hopes of defeating her was close to nothing. She found out “He’s willing to die for her, just as I was for Stefan long ago” And now understood that even if her love for Stefan was more one sided, her love for him was pure.
So she pretended to be defeated, and let Prince Philip wake Aurora up. She gave her blessing secretly from the shadows. She realized that just because it didn’t happen for her, doesn’t mean it should never happen for someone else.
She also learns a valuable thing in love, that letting go and embrace love again is far more satisfying than dwelling in the mist of revenge.
So she hides away, as a villain in stories she remains, to protect the thought of true love.
The End.
Yup! That's about how i would have changed the story line. So it stays truer to the animated one.
Sorry for the grammar mistakes. Hope you enjoyed it!

ok for one, your picture is fantastic, but two. I loved the way it ended. I like how she ends up being a good person again in the end. and I still don't see how your version of the betrayel could be worse than the actul betrayel. and one of the reasons I like the ending is that Disney is veering away from the whole true love within 5 minutes of meeting each other. because that is allwrong anyway and yes I'll admit I was hoping that ahe would've been the one to transform into the fire-breathing dragon but I do like the original version better. Not to take away from yours because I liked yours but I still love the other more

Very nice composition. The sharp cheek bones and and ominous green tinted lighting from below really scream awesome. Those are the best traits of the character in my opinion and you capitalized.

wow! So amazing! :') Dem Cheekbones!!!
I also was surprised that her name was Maleficent as a child. I always thought it was a name she had created for herself, or one that the people who were afraid of her just called her, because it sounds like "malevolent." But other than that, oh man I loved that movie. I loved the fact that she was the one who woke up Aurora. Just shows that there are other kinds of love that are just as if not more powerful, which is something the media plays down a lot. They make it out to be that romantic love is the only one that matters. But it isn't true. Anyway good job capturing her! So well done! Angelina is so dang beautiful.

Actually I never was fond of the new movie (especially of these three fairies, they were horribly stupid).
But I adored the old one, so it was even worse for me, that they changed so much. And not even for the better...
However I'm always open for art and as soon as I saw your picture I SAW my old beloved evil Maleficent in it. Her diabolic beauty I adored since I was a little child.
And in the moment I read your description I was awestruck. My Goodness! It was beyond perfect... It was all I wished for the movie, that never became true.
Thank you, thank you so much! You are my heroine of the day! Just because you proved that the movie could've been truer to the animated one, while still being a different story.
May I also mention, that I was so glad to read that she(!) turned into a dragon and only pretended to be defeated in your version? That was so great, I couldn't stop myself from giggling~

Thank you so much! I always thought characters, especially evil powerful ones, should not be so easily defeated by the hero, they seem to somewhat let the heroes get the chance, ie, talking their plans too much, or waiting too long to kill off the hero. So like an all powerful unstoppable Maleficent, should be defeated only when she wants to.
My favorite fairy is Merryweather! When she's all unhappy about things, it's so adorable!

i thought the same thing about Aurora and Mal's encounters, that the lil princess believes them to be dreams at first, cuz then "Once Upon A Dream" would be even more pertinent to the story.
what i thought would have been great was to have Mal watching Aurora WITHOUT knowing who she really is, cuz i thought her watching Aurora in the new version while in the original she had NO idea where she was was kinda inconsistent with the premise of the film. It also makes for a great bit of dramatic irony, something that was present in the original (with Aurora and Philip falling in love, then her getting heartbroken by their separation, without knowing they're betrothed anyway).
Aurora lives as a peasant girl under the new alias "Briar-Rose", Maleficent learns of humans living in the forest, which is HER domain, so naturally, she wants to keep an eye on her to make sure she doesn't prove to be a threat, what with Mal's newfound distrust in humanity. That way she sees Aurora as a PERSON, not just the offspring of her enemy, and gets to know her from a much more objective standpoint.
I also figured there would be more political motivations to this story, like in Burton's Alice in Wonderland or Lion King (which was done by the same writer as Maleficent). In the original, Aurora was supposed to marry Philip so that they're kingdoms would be united. After hearing of Stefan's role, i figured "okay, so they want their kids married so that with their united forces they'll be strong enough to take on the fairy kingdom". but apparently i was wrong XP
Then when "Rose" gets older and Mal realizes who she really is, she thinks "maybe this curse thing wasn't such a good idea after all" cuz she sees that Aurora will be the benevolent leader that both worlds are in need of.
Another problem i had was the three fairies; they're characters are far more underdeveloped than even they're original counterparts. In SB, they were atleast seemingly intelligent, while in Maleficent, they're a bunch of squabbling bird-brained morons. I did like how it showed that they were incapable of taking care of the baby; they've lived as fairies for how many centuries? and they think they can take care of an infant without ANY magic whatsoever?? yeah, we'll see how well THAT goes, HA! One thing i noticed about the original was that the blue fairy (Merryweather) was actually very smart and capable, but was stepped on and under-appreciated by the other fairies (Flora, specifically), just because she was the youngest and smallest. I was hoping the fairies would be developed more, what with us seeing them over the span of 16 years, but nope!
I think I'm gonna write my own "retelling" of SB + Maleficent, cuz the one they did was fantastic, but still leaves a lot to be desired. The problem was they had a GREAT story that was produced by some obviously very superficial people. "Let's toss this awesomely developed and well-thought script and instead have big wings and sparking fairies dancing across the water." V_V smh
I bet if Burton had handled this film (he WAS going to, but walked out), he would have done the story much better justice than Stromberg.
As far as her being a "villain", the whole point of this story is that things aren't always so black and white, like they were in the 50s for example in this version, she's more of an "anti-hero", an otherwise heroic figure who does some questionable actions. She's still bad, but think "bad for WHO?" Evil is a matter of perspective; Stefan is evil to Maleficent cuz he wants to destroy her fairy kingdom, and Maleficent is evil to Stefan and his people cuz she wants to destroy HIS kingdom.
The moral of this story is: AN EYE FOR AN EYE MAKES THE WHOLE WORLD BLIND, and BLIND VENGEANCE IS DANGEROUS CUZ A LOT OF INNOCENT PEOPLE GET HIT IN THE CROSSFIRE

I especially agree with your thoughts about the name. Since the "Mal" suffix literally means "bad" or "evil" (malevolent, malware, malice, malpractice, ect.), it seems a little weird that she would have that name while she was a good, innocent little fairy. I wish she had spent more time being bad, too. the parts where she goes full-on villain were so good, I just wanted more!

I think she was named that because in the original script, it was said her mother died the night she was born, and her father was the "red cap", the darkest fairy of all. and she was known throughout her childhood to be a troublemaking hellion and the other fairies are quick to condemn her for all these reasons.
the problem is that they opted out of storytelling to instead give us a shallow glittering glam-fest

they also had it written that her horns are actually a curse.
her aunt Ulla, who ruled as the tyrannical queen, cursed her to wear them for 100 years "so that everyone can know what a devil she truly is". then after Ulla died, the horns fell off. thats why she fashioned them into her headdresses she wears from that point on, so she would be seen as a devilish queen; she literally wears her darkness with pride

Beautiful painting!
And I like your version of the story better than the movie because yours is actually canon compliant with 1959 Sleeping Beauty.
I was also surprised that she was just called Maleficent from the very beginning.
Wouldn't it be cool if her name was something else and Stefan, after he betrayed her, told everyone in the human kingdom she was called Maleficent to paint her in a bad light?
But I liked how insignificant Prince Phillip` s story line was in the movie. Liked, as in I found it hilarious and adorable =^_^=

Excellent work! What program did you use?
I saw the movie today myself and overall I liked it very much. I do agree with you on many issues in relation to how the story unfolded in reference to the original Sleeping Beauty. And for me the biggest disappointment was that Maleficent herself didn't turn in the dragon. I also agree they should have stuck with the original plot when Maleficent places the curse on Aurora where she says, "...prick her finger on a spinning wheel AND DIE! As it was, the 3rd fairy still didn't give her gift in the movie she could have changed the curse as was done in the original. So why they deviated from the original plot there doesn't make sense.
But all in all I did enjoy the movie, particularly the beginning when you see 'good' Maleficent with her wings and the flying scenes were spectacular. While I always thought Maleficent to be beautiful in Sleeping Beauty...the new movie just takes her beauty to the next level, particularly when she has her wings and long hair. It does kind of make me think that Stephan was a royal putz to not have stayed by Maleficent's side. Her kingdom was a heck of a lot nicer.

Beautifully done. I kind of figured it was Photoshop as it seemed a bit more complex than if it would be Manga Studio. But I been hearing good things about the latter and I have seen some surprising stuff done with it. The thing is Manga Studio is much cheaper than Photoshop.

Magnificent Maleficent is my line now. I seen the movie yesterday. From my standpoint it, I would say Jolie had quite a bit of fun doing that role, especially since she wanted to do it long before the movie was conceived. She did a fantastic job. Overall the movie was great, but there were some instances that didn't follow the original Sleeping Beauty that I am not in agreement with. I don't want to give away too much info as I don't want to spoil it for those that have not seen the movie yet.
