Description An idea that appeared one night as I was staring at the ceiling. I'm still wondering about it myself.

Fabulous! That background is amazing- I use microns myself. I see you have a little Harry Clarke influence yourself. Like yourself, I rarely meet people who have heard of him or CA Smith. What a shame!

Thank you for the comment and for adding this to your favorites. I think I've gone through so many micron pens that there's a micron pen graveyard somewhere in my room. I count Harry Clarke, along with A. Beardsley and Kay Nielsen as big influences, but Clarke's pen and ink illustrations are still my favorites.

Yes, I also have dozens of half-used microns everywhere (I only use them while they give a nice smooth line). I first came across Clarke's work in an old issue of Nyctalops when I was twelve and I've loved him ever since. I have his bio, plus Poe's collection and Faust (my edition is from the 1920's but doesn't include the color plates-I found them in a Time-Life folklore book). I only have one book from Kay Nielson, but his stuff is nice too. As for Beardsley, I own about 8 or 9 books of his work. It's too bad he died so young. From that period, I also like Edmund Dulac and Arthur Rackham.

My unhealthy intake of Harry Potter fan fiction is probably to blame for that... Somebody's work I recently read used Conrad's Heart of Darkness as a jumping-off point, as well as Silence of the Lambs, and then, with those as the frame, worked in Harry Potter characters. It was called "Dark Gods in the Blood" and was quite a trip...

But the idea of Dark Gods among us has stayed in my mind's eye since then. I'm sure there will be some patently weird drawings sometime down the road. To be certain, you've also got me thinking in that direction.

You had me remembering American Gods and the implications of bringing all the household gods of one's culture to another new land. Are you still mulling over the various Yautja deities and ceremonies; I distinctly remember a heavily scarred 'ceremonial Blood Pig' being mentioned in Alien vs Predator: Prey, and that got me thinking all over again

"The horror, the horror..."

It's beautiful, as usual! I love your pictures! ...There is only a little part of it I would like to see different (but is only my taste and my "obbsession" about) and it's about faces: they are "too beautiful and human"... ...But I told you, it's only my taste: your work IS GORGEOUS!!!

wow! - once more, Aubrey Beardsley comes to my mind, mixed with Arcimboldo - I'm really amazed... only a bit dubious about the coloring on the left face, but it's ok anyhow...
I love how moody they look... and how fluently the details flow out from your pen, almost effortlessly... your art is so special

squidink In reply to sharkcloud [2005-11-23 08:17:55 +0000 UTC]

Heeheehee, I must confess, I didn't like how the left face turned out and so I blotted it out; I tend to be a bit wary around faces because they're something I don't like doing often. Thank you very much though for your comment and and I'll make sure to do better since you always inspire me to do better

sharkcloud In reply to squidink [2005-11-23 09:56:44 +0000 UTC]

one more point we have in common! I don't like doing faces either, although sometimes I just LOVE drawing faces - it's really bizarre...
...hehehe, and I wouldn't say I 'inspire' you, I think it's more a matter of exchanging opinions and feelings, sharing, communicating... all things many people often desert, thus dryin' out their imagination and 'inspiration' - don't you think so?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

squidink In reply to sharkcloud [2005-11-23 19:11:28 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I agree, I think the exchange of ideas and communication really influences our artwork

I don't know what it is about drawing faces, and I tend to get hasty and impatient with them...but I think I should do some exercises just to get comfortable with them...oooh, that reminds me, I still have to do an entry for Die Andere Welt!!! and some other projects of a sharky nature !!!!

sharkcloud In reply to squidink [2005-11-24 14:51:25 +0000 UTC]

now that we are mentioning it, I feel like I neglected faces for too long, too! but I'm working on ten different images right at this moment... don't have time enough (I share my pc with my sister and my father, and we are always arguing about it, accusing each other of monopolizing it not caring about the other two! )
...some other projects of a sharky nature? ...sounds interesting...

Heeheehee, yes, sharky nature indeed!
