more about the elk tribe: Grey elk tribe cave map

Crow and dawn pranced near the entrance of the cave, both tingling with a sense of excitement for the days activities. the two sabers watched the young men of the camp plus Harvac gather around Rohain who had been scouting with Harvac for two days to find a good hunting spot. Rohain had a stick and was drawing a crude but effective map of the area where some irish elk had been spotted hiding out in a small meadow near a cluster of trees. As Rohain spoke and pointed the sabers would chuff, and the men joining the hunt nodded or suggested alternate routes. This was an important hunt for all of them, if they could secure at least two if not three deer the winter would look less bleak and resources would feel less barren, even one of the great elk would provide for the tribe a moon or two, but surplus meant less time spent hunting for small game in the dead winter. the other reason was the elks were rich in fat and had already shed their antlers for winter, meaning no special ceremony had to be done to purify them to thank the elk spirit, though if successful a celebration may still be held. Rohain felt his nerves begin to unsettle his stomach, this was also a proving hunt for him as hunt leader. if he failed the leader and spirit talker may deem someone else worthy of the hunting talisman, which Rohain felt he had earned this past summer. he and Crow where blessed by Hasswei, the god of the hunt and the one he had been praying to and even did a small private ritual with the spirit talker to encourage success.
Harvac had been watching the hunt leader, excited to be apart of the hunt though he wasn't counted among the men but in the grey area of man and child. He listened carefully as the formally shy and quiet man in front of him delegated tasks one by one for the hunt, with out worgs the tasks seemed odd to some but understood. Harvac waited patiently for his role to be announced, he could hear the panting of Dawn who stood behind him, her graceful fangs barely missing his head as she seemed to be listening just as intent as the human hunters. one by one each hunter got a role, all given instruction to make the kill if able to but don't jump to early. Finally Rohain came to Harvac, and he motioned the Spirit talker to join the group. with a confused face Harvac faced his father, the spiritual leader of the tribe, who smiled with a proud look in his eye, that glimmered away as he spoke returning to the Spirit talker and no longer a fathers look.
"Harvac, son of elk tribe, today you hunt with the hunt leader, denied was your man hood rites this past summer. I have looked to the spirits talked to them, and meditated on what they told me. you will receive your totem today, to go along with your spirit name, today you will caste the cloak of child and become one of the counted men of the tribe. today you must bring down the Elk chosen by Rohain, trialed and blessed of Hasswei, hunt leader of the Tribe of the grey elk, son of Falcon and Juniper of the sturdy mountain hearth, and keeper of the Saber Crow, provider for the sabers Dawn and Alkali." Harvac swallowed a dry gulp, and looked at the group of men smiling and a low chant had begun. the two sabers riled up began to circle giving low grunts as spear ends began to thump the ground. the noise seemed to waiver and have a life of its own. then Harvac caught Rohains eyes and when the thumping got to a climax the Spirit talker silenced the group, and Rohain produced a small stone with glowing runes. Then the hunt leader began to chant:
"we call upon Hasswei, revered spirit god of the hunt! Lend us your skill"
"We call on his great skill"
"We call upon Hasswei, revered spirit god of the hunt! lend us your stealth"
"We call upon his great stealth"
"We call upon Hasswei, revered spirit god of the hunt! bless this hunt!"
"we ask for your shining light to bless the hunt!"
the hunters gathered and touched the stone, glowing slightly Crow and Dawn seemed to sense it was pleased and also sensed the eagerness of the group to head out, with the sun starting to poke its head over the mountains. Rohain placed the stone back in a small pouch at his hip and grabbed his spear and gave one last look to his mother and Aroura sleeping in the small home of mountain hearth. He tapped Crow and Dawn and began to head out leading for the first time a group of hunters to a large and decisive hunt. he could sense the calm and collected aura of Dawn, it seemed to radiate throughout the small group. He was glad he had made today the rite of hunting day for Harvac, he felt it was better than trying to find a totem in the woods. He doubted he would ever force a man or woman to go through that. He had spent the last week preparing for this hunt and the idea of Harvac kept coming to mind as he planned. He knew often the Spirit talker would consult with the hunt leader about boys who seemed to be ready to participate in manhood rites and decide how each one would become a man, or if a woman wanted to be counted among the hunters. though this time it was the opposite, Rohain consulted with Spirit talker and both had the same feeling the time was right, and had been confirmed when Harvac spotted the elk herd. Rohain smiled at Crow, if it hadn't have been for his rites six summers ago, Crow may have never entered his life. He knew the rites were supposed to change a boy to a man, in the tribes eyes, but he felt some rites changed more than others. He didn't doubt Harvac would never be the same after today, but he hoped he would walk back on his own two legs without harm coming to him. Soon Rohain looked around and slowed the party down to a crawl, hunting in the plains had taught him to wait for the right moment to strike, he began silently motioning everyone into position, he placed Dawn with Harvac, though he would have to make the kill, Dawn would be allow and encouraged to help slow or maim the animal to increase success. once everyone was in position time seemed to stand still, there was little wind as the group of five hunters settled into place. each covered in sod and grasses their smell was minimal if at all, and Rohain kept by Crow, ready to flush out the small heard once he could see them. a small twig cracked and grass shifted, Rohain held his breath, holding onto Crow waiting as he watched a large Elk stride out he stood a good head higher than Rohain on his tippy toes at the shoulder and walked with grace, following behind his was four more bachelor Elk younger and not as large as the older, but not quite at full maturity leader. Rohain watched his heart pounding in his ears as the sun began to warm the air making a humid stuffiness that made the area seem cut off from the rest of the world. he gave a small tap as they passed by his landmark and Crow slunk off making the large elk uneasy as they sensed but could not see the danger in the shadows. Rohain gave a small bird chirp and caught eyes with Harvac and pointed to one of the younger bucks. then counted down with his fingers giving him and crow the signal to begin to hunt.
the serene meadow burst into chaos as the five hunters sprang out with spears ready forcing the deer into a drying riverbed that had been choked off by fallen trees. Rohain got close and could fell his chest puffing out air as he threw a spear hitting its mark sending the one of the large elk down onto his knees. He looked at Harvac who had followed his appointed elk towards the ravine, Rohain saw the Elk start to jump but a fawn flash came from the side and the deer stayed on his path. Rohain commanded crow to assist as he Saw Harvac sprinting his spear ready as the beast entered the choked ravine the smell of blood and humans made him rear, Giving Crow the opportunity to jump onto its back joining his saber partner. with a jutting thrust Harvac speared the large elk into the heart, the beast gave out a long shriek and fell down to his belly allowing the two sabers to jump off. Four elks lay at the hunters feet, the leader gone large enough to jump the blockage. Each hunter silently let out a prayer to the hunt god for his mercy and his approval. Rohain began setting up claims for hides though Harvac would get the best cuts and the hide from the great elk he brought down. He dipped his fingers in the blood and drew a line across the young mans nose, smiling as he then placed his hands on Harvacs shoulders.
"He is a man now! you will be counted among the men of the tribe and no longer a child. you are Harvac, son of the Spirit talker, son of elk tribe, counted among the hunters. And what a hunter you are." Rohain said as he began to set up field prepping with the other men. He sent Dawn to get some others and lead them back, though he gave a signal and no words were spoken, he had told the Oakiba he would send dawn back when the hunt was done, and Crow back if it had failed, and both if someone was hurt, success or not. soon more of the tribe showed up and began helping many of them congradulating Harvac, and some of the younger, and some not so young, women began to become giddy around him, since many of the men had taken off. soon the tribe had packed away into carrying baskets and sacks the remains of the elk, bones loaded onto a travois being pulled by Thunder. Crow munched on the lesser cuts given to him in praise, and Dawn was given a heart for her bravery in the hunt and for being the beast that was hunting with the boy who was now a man. They returned to the cave where everyone began to help prepare meats for drying, cooking, and distributing. Oakiba smiled looking at the older man beside him who glowed in pride. things were looking up.
