you know when i first played mass effect a few years ago i knew these where not protheans and i am guessing that these are what came before the protheans and i bet im right what else could they possibly be

They're the Inusannon, according to the Prothean DLC in Me3. Bioware had to retcon the statues on Illos as an older race because of the Collectors appearance in Me2.

perhaps thats the species that came before the protheans that javik spoke of, but knowing ea games' handling of mass effect recently id say they have completely abandoned the orignal concept of the protheans all together for petty profit..
