Description One of the first theropods to be done in my new style. Here's Yangchuanosaurus, all fleshed-out.
___

Yangchuanosaurus shangyouensis
- The real "sharptooth" that the little "longnecks" (mamenchisaurs) had to actually deal with
(Dong et al., 1978)

Temporal range: Late Jurassic, Oxfordian, ~163.5-157 Ma
Location: China, eastern Asia

Length: Around ~10 metres
Probable mass: ~2.5-3 tonnes

Etymology: Yongchuan reptile from Shangyou

Yangchuanosaurus shangyouensis is a species of large metriacanthosaurid allosauroid that lived in China during the Late Jurassic, found from the Upper Shaximiao of the Dashanpu Formation. The holotype, CV00215, was a juvenile specimen found in 1978. An adult specimen, CV00216, was formerly assigned as the type specimen of Y. magnus, but the differences between Y. shangyouensis and Y. magnus turned out to simply be ontogenic and intraspecific, and Y. magnus became a junior synonym of Y. shangyouensis.

The rugose surface of it's nasal region suggests that keratinous tissue likely covered that region in life, and this probably formed a display structure, a boss used in intraspecific conflict, or both.

It probably filled a similar niche as it's North American relative Allosaurus, preying on ornithischians, smaller theropods, and small sauropods, with larger ones being too risky to attack usually.

This looks really stunning, I love the unique colors, especially of the eye. (I say unique since I haven't seen many green scaly theropods in a long time actually.)

Thanks.

Yeah, it's a shame. "Brown" doesn't have a monopoly on "real", people.

Great work. Personally I kind of prefer to imagine Yangchuanosaurus with tiger-like pattern, you know since they've both Asian apex predators, and Sinraptor with the leopard pattern. XD
